Getting Girls into Tech: Founder of ‘Girls Who Code’ Shares Advice with Greenwich Girls

Reshma Saujani who founded Girls Who Code and who has a wildly popular TED Talk “Teach Girls Bravery, Not Perfection,” addressed girls from Greenwich High School, Greenwich Academy, Stanwich School, Whitby School, Convent of the Sacred Heart and Greenwich Country Day School. Saujani urged the girls to work on becoming brave, and to embrace risk-taking and failure rather than limit themselves to what they are good at and aiming for perfection.

In New Teen-Led Business, “Role Model Mentors” Pairs GHS Students with Kids Grades 3-8

Brian Fagella and Catherine Veronis have recruited dozens of teenage mentors for a new business called Role Model Mentors, first piloted in Ridgefield. After success in that town, Brian and Catherine hope the operation, which pays teens who are paired with younger children according to shared interests for mentoring relationships. GHS Girls Swim & Dive Team Descend on Joey B’s Restaurant for a Fall Fundraiser

School is in session in Greenwich and Domenick Delfino, owner of Joey B’s again offered up his restaurant for a sports team fundraiser. On Tuesday members of the Greenwich High School swim and dive team worked in shifts behind the counter, taking orders for everything from hot dogs hamburgers to to salads. The restaurant, which is popular with GHS students, and the swimmers each have their favorites from the menu, which they listed as the mac ‘n cheese bites, BBQ chicken sandwich, chicken tenders and Oreo milk shakes respectively. The girls explained that previously the girls water polo team did a fundraiser at Joey B’s, as did the boys water polo and boys swim team, so they thought it would be a good idea to follow suit. “You can really raise a lot of money for your team,” said Ainsleigh Winget, a junior at the high school. GHS Then and Now: Tracking Trends and Interests through the Compass Yearbook

Now defunct clubs at GHS tell a story. Once there were clubs dedicated to specific professions including Future Doctors of America, Future Nurses of America, Future Teachers of America, and Future Business Leaders of America. Back in 1941, GHS cheerleaders were boys! In the 1980s, Greenwich High had a synchronized swimming club.

The Polar Bear Club dived into the Long Island Sound every other Sunday from November to Aprll. Its’ members wrote, “We love it! If you have never been to a Polar Bear swim, you will never understand the feeling of accomplishment you could have, standing on the beach dripping wet, with icicles forming in your hair.” Photo: Compass yearbook, 1990 Continue Reading →

PHOTOS: Back to School GHS is a Bright Start Despite Light Rain

About 640 seniors streamed into the GHS performing arts center on the first day of school. Friends found each other and the air buzzed with excitement. Dr. Winters asked everyone to stand up and introduce themselves to someone they didn’t know.
