At the first BOE meeting of the year, parents from a group called Speducated Greenwich testified about their experiences as parents of children receiving special education services in Greenwich Schools. Without a full 45 minute opportunity block, it will not be possible to offer students a full credit course at the end of the school day. The BOE advised the administration to devise a structured 30 minutes for students who are not excused for sports or school sanctioned activity so that they don’t just leave school early. Dr. Gildea proposed a creative solution to the “pain points” in this year’s new GHS start/end times. The idea of a non-rotating “opportunity block” at the end of the day would allow athletes to leave for games without missing a core academic subject. Most of the board members reacted very favorably.
