State Rep. Camillo to Be Honored at Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol Fundraiser

On Saturday, April 5 from 7:00pm to 11:30pm, a fundraiser will benefit the Cos Cob Fire Police Patrol (CCFPP), an organization that saves lives, valuable personal possessions, and money for our community here in Greenwich. The event will be held at Greenwich Country Day School and feature cocktails, heavy hors d’oeuvres, silent and live auction, plus dancing. This promises to be a fun event for an organization that saves lives, valuable personal possessions, and money for our community here in Greenwich. The CCFPP is based in Cos Cob, but serves the whole Town of Greenwich. Whether fighting fires, salvaging personal belongings due to fires and floods, or “protecting the protectors ” at fires and accident scenes, these selfless and brave men of the CCFPP are there for us when we need them the most. Time to Paint: Old Greenwich Artist Specializes in Pet Portraits

Old Greenwich painter Karen Schlansky always had talent. Last month her pastel “Freedom” was selected for Greenwich Art Society’s 97th Juried exhibition at Bendheim Gallery, which runs through March 28. Yet, as with many young people striking out on their own, or parents making practical decisions for their family, the mother of two grown children had other priorities over the years. After majoring in art at Skidmore, Schlansky launched a career in business, snagging a spot in the executive buying program at Ohrbach’s department stores, where she became a manager and buyer. “I received great training six days a week and two nights a week,” Schlansky said of her time at the store chain, which for decades was a destination for savvy shoppers. Greenwich Public Schools: Putting Community Service on a Pedestal

At Tuesday’s Community Service Awards Ceremony, Old Greenwich School Principal Patricia Raneri opened by event by acknowledging the 20′ banner across the stage quoting Mohandas Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The history of the awards dates back to 1986 when 13-year Superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools Ernie Fleishman was at the helm. Bronx Bombers 2014 predictions

Although the weather doesn’t make you think of baseball, the season is right around the corner. The Yankees made many moves with Carlos Beltran, Masahiro Tanaka, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, and Robinson Cano leaving. The situation has  changed a lot during the off season. Along with the additions and subtractions in free agency, Derek Jeter announced that this is his final season. GHS Junior Lights up School for Orphans in Africa

Julia Bunte-Mein a rising senior at GHS. She plays tennis, runs both track and cross country, and participates in the school’s honors arts program. As ambitious as she is optimistic, she learned of an inflatable LED light right around the time a friend told her about orphans in a Malawi school who rely on homemade kerosene lamps or candles. Her fundraiser has resulted in the safe, waterproof Luci Lights arriving in the hands of grateful orphans in Africa. Continue Reading →

29th Annual Jazz Festival at GHS “Essentially Ellington,” Totally Talented

Superlatives abound in describing the day-long jazz festival at Greenwich High School on Saturday. In a tremendous undertaking, showcasing stellar talent, the regional festival marked its 29th year. John Yoon, the band director for GHS, along with a host of student and parent volunteers welcomed ten ensembles from Connecticut and New York. The daylong event was attended by  jazz fans of all ages, some who traveled a great distance for the display of talent. Greenwich Chamber Networking Night to Feature Samples from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

Greenwich Chamber of Commerce will host a networking event at Arthur Murray Grande Ballroom in Greenwich on Wednesday, March 26 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Demonstrations of salsa dancing, Spanish wines from WineWise and appetizers from Dinosaur Bar-B-Que located nearby in Stamford’s South End will be part of a lively evening that provides local business an opportunity to network. The Chamber of Commerce will also have some fun raffle items.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que located on Canal Street in a renovated factory, and boasts a menu that features BBQ beans with pork, mac and cheese, crispy cole slaw, broccoli and carrot salad and Texas Bar-b-que brisket. Dinosaur began as a mobile concession by founder John Stage, along with two partners. Students, GHS Headmaster Recognized. YikYak, Drugs, Gift Cap Disparaged at BOE Meeting

Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting opened with student recognition including Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) talent search participants who scored above the top 25-30% of the 55,000 students who qualified to take the SAT in 7th and 8th grade. Also recognized were winners of the Scholastic Art Awards, the largest and longest running arts program, drawing over 1,500 entries from Connecticut this year.
