Time to Paint: Old Greenwich Artist Specializes in Pet Portraits

By Leslie Yager

Old Greenwich painter Karen Schlansky always had talent. Last month her pastel “Freedom” was selected for Greenwich Art Society’s 97th Juried exhibition at Bendheim Gallery, which runs through March 28. Yet, as with many young people striking out on their own, or parents making practical decisions for their family, the mother of two grown children had other priorities over the years. After majoring in art at Skidmore, Schlansky launched a career in business, snagging a spot in the executive buying program at Ohrbach’s department stores, where she became a manager and buyer. “I received great training six days a week and two nights a week,” Schlansky said of her time at the store chain, which for decades was a destination for savvy shoppers. Buddy wants to trust and please people. He takes treats gently and knows, sit, down and will roll over for a belly rub. He is housetrained and good with other dogs. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Public Schools: Putting Community Service on a Pedestal

At Tuesday’s Community Service Awards Ceremony, Old Greenwich School Principal Patricia Raneri opened by event by acknowledging the 20′ banner across the stage quoting Mohandas Gandhi: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” The history of the awards dates back to 1986 when 13-year Superintendent of Greenwich Public Schools Ernie Fleishman was at the helm. Superintendent McKersie credited Fleishman for elevating community service in our schools. “Ernie you have a legacy of us being a district known for caring,” McKersie said. “Community service is the embodiment of caring.” Continue Reading →

Sweets, You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried. 30 Years of The Breakfast Club.

By Leslie Yager
What’s amusing about being married to someone from another country are all the lost cultural references. After growing up on a steady diet of American TV and film, humming the Gilligan’s Island theme of the ill-fated three hour cruise, a three hour cruise, the I-Know-Nothing Colonel Klink refrain, having someone gaze back incredulously is frustrating. I’m probably not alone in my obsession with John Hughes’ film The Breakfast Club starring Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy as five students in Saturday morning detention at Shermer High School. March 24, 2014 marked 30 years since that fictitious Saturday detention on March 24, 1984. It’s significant that typing just a partial phrase muttered by Molly Ringwald’s character Claire into a Google search brings up the entire Breakfast Club script. Continue Reading →

Along with the additions and subtractions in free agency, Derek Jeter announced that this is his final season. So it is sure to say that this baseball season will be interesting to watch for Yankees fans. Continue Reading →

Tiny New York Kitchen: Homemade Gnocchi

By Victoria Hart Glavin of Tiny New York Kitchen

The best gnocchi I have ever tasted was in Rome. I was also lucky enough to make them with a wonderful Roman chef last October when I traveled to Rome. Gnocchi are very delicate and the procedure to make them is fairly simple. It may take some trial and error to understand the proper consistency of the dough. It must be soft, but not wet. Better Business Bureau Blog: I’m In Big Trouble! How About You?

By Howard Schwartz, Executive Communications Director, Better Business Bureau Serving Connecticut

Within the course of one week, my world has been turned upside down. Or so I have been led to believe. First, on March 6th, I received an eviction notice by email, informing me that the bank has foreclosed on my property and that I had three days to respond to the email. The sender, a Mr. Bentley, from “Real estate agency,” was kind enough to attach a file to the email with his contact information and bank resolution. If that wasn’t bad enough, March 12th I received another email, this one informing of a notice to appear in the “court of Cleveland,” and urging me to bring all documents and witnesses pertaining to the case.
