GHS Grads Break Silence on Drugs from Marijuana to Heroin

On Thursday the YMCA of Greenwich and Liberation Programs hosted a seminar to help parents talk with their teens about drugs. Liberation youth options counselor, Cerissa Orbegoso, whose office is housed inside the Greenwich YMCA, introduced former client Mark Pelazza, the featured speaker. Pelazza, now a soft-spoken, clean-cut 24-year-old, described growing up in Greenwich in a loving family who gave him everything he ever wanted. Got Ethics? BBB Announces a $2,500 Scholarship Contest for High School Jrs

Connecticut Better Business Bureau is now accepting submissions for its 2014 BBB Student Ethics Scholarship Award. The award recognizes high school students in their junior year who personify high ethical standards demonstrated in a number of ways. The scholarship is for school-related expenses including tuition, books and lodging. The winner will be selected by an independent panel of judges to receive a scholarship of $2,500 for use at an accredited college or university. Tiny New York Kitchen: Baking Powder Biscuits

You can serve these delicious biscuits with dinner or use with Strawberry Shortcake. INGREDIENTS

2 Cups Sifted Unbleached Flour
2 1/2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
1 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
1/3 Cup Solid Vegetable Shortening
2/3 Cup Light Cream

Position your rack in the center and preheat your oven to 425 degrees. In large-size bowl, combine sifted flour, baking powder, and kosher salt. Use pastry blender or 2 forks to cut in shortening until mixture looks like coarse meal. Gradually add cream adding just enough cream so that dough is soft, but not sticky. Friendship Day at Glenville School Models Caring Behavior, Reinforces District Norms

 

Where better to start modeling caring behavior and the meaning of friendship than in kindergarten? At Glenville School, Joanne Riley, who has been teaching for 30 years, and paraprofessional Sharon Wessel, a 14-year veteran, planned several engaging activities for their class on Thursday. March 27 was “Be Here, Be a Friend Day” in Greenwich Public Schools. To remind students about the importance of being a good friend, the class broke into pairs to conduct ‘friendship interviews.” The teachers first modeled the exercise, which had the goal of supporting an environment for caring for one’s self and others. Saturday Greenwich High School hosted the 29th annual Jazz Festival with “Essentially Ellington,” with 10 jazz bands traveling to Greenwich for the day.  The GHS Jazz Lab Band played at 11:00am and the Ensemble at 6:00pm. Tiny New York Kitchen: Gnocchi With Asparagus

Gnocchi With Asparagus is the perfect weeknight dinner. Either make your own gnocchi or purchase freshly made from your local market. INGREDIENTS

1 Pound Fresh Gnocchi (16 Ounces)
1/2 Cup Unsalted Butter
1 Bunch Trimmed & Chopped Asparagus (Leave Tips Whole)
Grated Zest of 1 Lemon
Juice of 1 Lemon
3/4 Cup Pasta Cooking Water
1/2 Teaspoon Kosher Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Freshly Ground Pepper
1/2 Cup Grated Parmesan Cheese (Plus More For Topping)
2 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Basil
