What’ll You Do with Your Pets Come the Next Disaster?

After Treepocalypse in March of 2010 and then Hurricanes Irene in August 2011 and Sandy in October 2012, I’ve know I would never leave my dogs behind in an emergency. But beyond upgrading my flashlight to a camping lantern and buying a big dog crate, I can’t say I’ve readied myself, much less my dogs for disaster. And yet the parade of severe weather emergencies marches on. “The Pet Emergency & Disaster Readiness Course being offered by GEMS and benefiting Adopt-A-Dog is a logical start,” said Adopt-A-Dog’s Director Allyson Halm. Learn how to be prepared when the unthinkable happens.  The course will be held on Thursday, Feb. Continue Reading →

Really? Greenwich Avenue Retail Citizenship Snow Fails!

A brisk walk with my black labs down Greenwich Ave around 6pm was a study in retail citizenship. While active traffic lanes and parking spots were plowed beautifully by the Town, the sidewalks in front of individual stores were another story. And after having spent two hours shoveling my own front path, driveway and sidewalk in front of my house — plus removing potential ice missiles from the roof and hood of my car — I might have had more patience for truant shovelers. Moving down Greenwich Ave, Nika’s walk of shame started at Sephora. Snow in front of Jewelry by Rose. Continue Reading →

Why Do Greenwich Moms Volunteer at Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter? Greenwich Doesn’t Want Them

Tina Aronson and Kerri Ann Hofer have a great deal in common. Their children  attended North Street School and Central Middle School and Greenwich High School. Both moms  adore dogs and are dedicated to helping them. Initially, both Aronson and Hofer were discouraged because when they looked for a way to help homeless dogs and cats in Greenwich, they learned Greenwich Animal Control does not allow volunteer dog walkers. Not ones to be discouraged, the two Greenwich moms joined forces with Cat Assistance, a non-profit based in Ardsley, NY that rescues both cats and dogs and has a network of foster homes. Snow-Topia: A Stroll Down Greenwich Ave in Photos

Greenwich Avenue this afternoon fell into something of a state of semi-hibernation. At the start of  rush hour the best word to describe downtown Greenwich was tranquil. Here’s a look from the top of the Avenue on down. Greenwich Free Press’s only advice is to beware of the snow piled up around intersections. The puddles are deep and more than one pedestrian trod in slush up and over ankle and even calve-high slush. Continue Reading →

Addiction – DRUGS DON’T DISCRIMINATE

By Ginger Katz, Founder of Courage to Speak

On September 10, 1996, I lost my 20-year-old son, Ian, to a drug overdose just before he was going into a rehabilitation program the next day. Ian had used marijuana, tobacco and other drugs in high school. At one point he was picked up by an officer at a park with two other boys. He was scolded and told to go home. The officer said “If I ever find you in this town again with any drugs, I will arrest you. Continue Reading →

Another Smash: SuperShow ’14 at Central Middle School

This year marks Anne Beaty’s 14th year producing and directing SuperShow at Central Middle School and the energy still burns. The winter tradition carried on with a sold-out house and four super heroes reprising their roles as scorekeepers. Subscribe to the daily Greenwich Free Press newsletter. Highlights of the show included the Top Tucker competition. Tucker McGarrity, along with his sidekick Emma, danced to Blurred Lines, and then faced off against the CMS 7th grade dancers who performed their own rendition of the chart topping song.
