Formal Ceremony Will Mark Naming of “Honorable David N. Theis Memorial Bridge”

A formal ceremony naming the Mianus Bridge in honor of Selectman Dave Theis is set for Aug 30 at 11:00am. Every year at the beginning of the Memorial Day weekend, a display of American flags is erected on each side of the bridge over the Mianus River on Rt 1. Cars and trucks toot their horns in approval, but not everyone might be aware that it was Greenwich Selectman Dave Theis who was the driving force behind the flag tradition on the bridge. Back to School Tax Holiday Exemption Rules

The tax holiday begins Sunday, August 16th and runs through Saturday, August 22nd. The average family with children in grades K to 12, grade plans to spend $630 on electronics, apparel and other back to school items this year. The exemption is for items under $100, but if the item costs more than $100 but a sale or discount brings it below $100 per item, it is tax exempt. Greenwich YMCA Marlins Swim Team Celebrates Long Course Success

The journey has been long, but the rewards are mounting up for Marlins swimmers.Junior National Qualifiers include Ailee Mendoza, 16, swimming 2:19.77 in the 200 backstroke and Clayton Morikawa, 17, swimming 2:26.04 in the 200 breaststroke. Marlins Women’s 400 Medley Relay team made up of Ailee Mendoza, Sophia Moore, Carolyn Morakawa and Quinn Scannell came in 3rd with a time of 4:24.06. Breaking the Connecticut State Record in the 13-14 Boys 400 Free Relay, were swimmers Christian Farricker, Marcus Hodgson, Connor Morikawa and Stephan Todorovic, who swam a 3:50.81, beating the record from 3:51.35. Yoon Hearings Day 3: Renowned Musician & Father of “Student A” Testify

The bulk of testimony on Day 3 of the terminated Band director’s hearings came from Student A’s father. He said his trumpet playing son’s junior year included four hours of sleep a night, four AP Classes and the balance honors level. Did an anguished father possibly meddle with good intentions when asking for excused absences and consideration for his son’s asthma. Or was the band teacher an abusive bully who singled out the boy, call him selfish and picking on him in front of his peers? Was the over-worked teen acting disrespectfully toward his band teacher? Did he fail to keep his dad in the loop about his mounting pressure, tardies, absences, and plummeting grade until it was too late? At the next hearing, Aug. 31, there will be testimony from the Superintendent and a former band student before he/she heads to college. Continue Reading →
