At the CIAC Class LL boys outdoor track championships in New Britain on May 30, the Cardinals celebrated earning the team title, finishing ahead of rivals from Hamden. But the win was overturned by CIAC after a religious accommodation allowed a Hamden athlete to compete in the MM meet the following day, Sunday and have his points apply to the previous day’s event. The situation is unprecedented. GHS athletes and parents asked the CIAC to review how the situation was handled.

The Greenwich Council, Boy Scouts of America elected of two new officers at its recent annual meeting: Council President, Vincent LaPadula, and Council Commissioner, James Heavey. Both LaPadula and Heavey live in Greenwich and are actively involved in the Council, not only on the Board but also as fathers of Cub and Boy Scouts. “We are excited to announce the selection of Vince LaPadula and Jim Heavey for the top volunteer leadership positions of the Greenwich Council known as the Key 3,” said Kevin O’Shea, Scout Executive. Local Boy Scout Councils are headed by a collective of leaders known as the “Key 3”, consisting of the Scout Executive, Council President and Council Commissioner. At Greenwich Town Hall, Dr. Craig Allen, Medical Director at Rushford, a substance abuse and mental health treatment organization, gave a presentation on the facts and myths about marijuana use in adolescents. He said it is critical for young people to stay away from tobacco, marijuana and other addictive substances before 21 – 90% of those who struggle with addiction started before the age of 21. In fact there is a one in four likelihood of developing an addiction if a person uses before the age of 18.
