PHOTOS: West Side, Best Side! Western Middle School’s Head Shaving Raises Funds for St Baldrick’s

Western Middle School’s “Greenwich Braves the Shave” event took place on Thursday night to benefit the St Baldrick’s Foundation.

The event included entertainment from J & the B-Sides and an appearance from the Fairfield County Police Pipes & Drums, who included bagpipe player, Kerry Gavin, Western’s vice principal.

This annual event enlisted “shavees” who volunteered to shave their heads to raise money for childhood cancer research.

One young volunteer, Thaddeus Fatsi, a 7th grader at Western Middle School, not only raised funds by having his head, but he and his mother also brought in pies which they sold for $2.00 a slice to raise extra funds.

Thaddeus’s mother said he had been moved by the story of Steven Sudell, who was diagnosed with brain cancer while he was a student at Western. Steven recently passed away and the school honors him in many ways including with a kindness rocks garden.

For Thaddeus, Thursday night was the sixth time he had shaved his head.

“We all pet him afterwards,” his mom said.

On Friday Mr. Gavin announced the event raised over $16,000.
