PHOTOS: WMS Mane Event 2020 Helps St Baldrick’s Foundation Fight Childhood Cancers

On Thursday night Western Middle School continued one of its best traditions, the Mane Event, where the community volunteers to have their ponytails chopped and their heads shaved, all in the name of raising money for childhood cancer research and St Baldrick’s Foundation.

The team of organizers was led by assistant principal Kerry Gavin, who shaved his head for the 16th year for St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Click here for his fundraising page.

As of 9:00pm on Thursday, Mr. Gavin had raised $1,364 toward his goal of $2,500.

Among the shavees was 7th grader Faith Franceschini, who not only lopped off her long ponytail, but had her head shaved as well. Faith, whose goal was goal was $2,150, had raised $2,232 for St Baldrick’s by Thursday night.

With Faith was her best friend Layla Rodriguez, also a 7th grader at WMS. Layla offered up her long ponytail for the cause.

Layla said she was crying because she was happy that a child will receive her hair. “I feel so good about what I did,” she said.
