The BET met Monday and the agenda included a motion presented by Democratic member Leslie Moriarty to discontinue the Old Greenwich School cost estimate project. Mr. Ramer said the process had become tainted because one member of the BET had talked to a bidder. Continue Reading →
The BOE voted 4-4 down party lines on a one-year contract extension, Republicans voting yes for one year and Democrats voting no, preferring a 2-year extension. The motion failed to pass. On a motion to extend the contract for two years, there was another tie vote down party lines. That motion also failed to pass. BOE chair Joe Kelly announced he would not be seeking another term in the November election and that was more reason for the superintendent’s contract extension to be one year, not two. The vote to approve the grant passed with a total of 210 votes – 104 in favor, 101 against and 5 abstentions.

“Why is it ok to increase spending and raise the taxes every year?” Solari asked. “I’ve heard that it’s a great achievement that our mill rate is only rising 2.5%, but we can do and have to do better,” said Joe Solari III from RTM District 8, adding that Greenwich should be preparing for the worst at this point, and that more cuts from Hartford are in the works.
Lucia Jansen, who has been on the RTM for 12 years, and is chair of the Budget Oversight Committee, echoed many of the sentiments of Solari. “Greenwich thinks it’s in a bubble immune from economic events in the state and US.” Continue Reading →
