Tattoo Your Dog to Spare Him from the “Buncher”? Theta Gamma Nu?

Roger is a five year old Lab-mix from Tennessee who was transported to Norwalk by a rescue group, fostered by a family in Norwalk and adopted by the editor of Greenwich Free Press three weeks ago. Roger is a fabulous dog. He is well behaved, happy and smart. Apparently his previous owner died and in the care of his owner’s surviving family he became ravaged by fleas and lost his hair. Most of Roger’s hair has since grown back, but he has bald spots. Continue Reading →

GHS Boys Varsity Hockey vs Xavier at Wesleyan: If 3 Goals is a Hat Trick, What is 4 Goals?

Many hockey parents made the trip from Greenwich to Wesleyan’s Freeman Athletic Center in Middletown on Saturday morning, though the team bus had to take the long route as the Merritt Parkway, the most direct route, prohibits buses. The GHS boys varsity hockey team faced off against the Falcons of Xavier High School, the all-boys Catholic school located in Middletown. In the second period, the Cards were down 2 to Falcons 5, but a period three rally on the part of GHS brought the final score to GHS 4 vs Xavier 5. Senior Luke Finnergan scored all 4 goals for the Cardinals.  Finnergan whose shirt number is the lucky 11, is team captain.   Continue Reading →

ACO Judy Umstead: It’s Hard to Keep up With Fred Acker’s Lies

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Animal Control Officer Judy Umstead addressed multiple criticisms meted out by Fred Acker of SPCA of Connecticut. In a Feb. 14 GFP feature, “A Conversation with Fred Acker, Former Director of SPCA of Connecticut,” Acker accused Umstead of profiteering from his misfortune, stealing three of his dogs and dragging out the legal process at the expense of the 60+ dogs seized from his rescue organization. Reached by phone, Umstead  answered questions with questions. Continue Reading →

The Night Sky: Jupiter

By Rick Bria

Jupiter can be found high in the southeast sky just after dark. It looks like a very bright star in the constellation Gemini, but viewed through a telescope Jupiter reveals its true nature as a huge gas giant planet with swirling bands of clouds and four Galilean moons. This picture of Jupiter was taken January 10, 2014 at the Mary Aloysia Hardey Observatory at Convent of the Sacred Heart. I used a 16” LX200 telescope with a Canon DSLR camera in movie crop mode. The resultant data was processed in RegiStax6 and Photoshop software. Continue Reading →

Congratulations to the Greenwich Blues local youth hockey, who just had two tournament  wins:  a bronze in Lake Placid and a gold in the Ocean State Classic in Providence, RI. Congratulations to the Pee Wee B team for winning a Bronze Medal at the CHE Lake Placid Tournament. Even though the team began the tournament rather slowly, they continued to improve, building momentum and definitely brought their “A” game to the medal round. Regulation ended in to 2-2 tie and, after surviving the 4-on-4 overtime, Kieran Sullivan put the team ahead in the shootout. Like the Greenwich Blues on Facebook. Continue Reading →
