More Snow for Greenwich, More Snow Citizenship Fails

The misplaced optimism of one Californian visiting Greenwich during  Storm Nika was amusing. Until it wasn’t. Message to out-of-town guests: Waiting for the snow to melt is not a strategy. The morning after the storm, when snow was slushy, but shovelable, the owner of this Mercedes with California plates demurred. By Friday night the car had a $55.00 parking ticket and thick casing of ice. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Exchange for Women’s Work: Shop-Local Destination Since 1935

Each time an independent business on Greenwich Ave or its environs succumbs to the pull of the chain store, Greenwich heaves a collective sigh. But while house after historic house in Greenwich falls prey to the wrecking ball, the charming house at 28 Sherwood Place, built in 1900, takes on increasing significance as it stands defiantly, frozen in time. While many Greenwich residents speed along Sherwood Place, a shortcut connecting Putnam Ave to Northfields and points north, the charming house that is home to the Greenwich Exchange for Women’s Work may feel like part of the furniture — invisible until it’s gone. Over the years, the Exchange, where 200+ artisan-consignors receive 67% of the selling price for their wares, survives primarily through word-of-mouth. And it helps that the building is owned outright by the non-profit it houses. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Diaspora: Destination Vermont

With Greenwich Public Schools and multiple private schools on winter break all week, traffic was light in town even before Storm Pax kept cars off the roads. GFP spent a few days in Vermont, along with what felt like half of Greenwich. Indeed, once in Vermont it’s easy to forget you’ve left town when your neighbor from home waves hello in the bread aisle at Shaw’s. Still, Manchester is resplendent in a fresh coat of snow, icicles dangling from historic slate roofs and proud statues dedicated to the town’s founders. The Equinox Hotel in Manchester, Vermont. How To Prevent Ice Dams: Tips For Homeowners

 By Janine Vairo
Icicles hanging along the eaves of your house may look beautiful, but they spell trouble. What Are Ice Dams? Ice dams are walls of ice that typically form at the edge of your roof or gutters when these areas clog up with ice. Ice dams are a pervasive and damaging winter roofing problem caused by poor roof ventilation and a warm attic space. Left untreated, ice dams can cause serious damage to your roof, gutters, paint, insulation, drywall, structure and even contribute to mold. Dams can tear off gutters, loosen shingles, and cause water to back up and pour into your house. When that happens, the results aren’t pretty: peeling paint, warped floors, stained and sagging ceilings. Continue Reading →

A Conversation with Fred Acker, Former Director of SPCA of Connecticut

On Wednesday Fred Acker, the former director of SPCA of Connecticut, contacted Greenwich Free Press (GFP) by phone to respond to the article, “Convicted of Animal Cruelty: Still ‘Rescuing’ Dogs” originally published on Feb. 3. Acker said he was sensitive to the subject of animals being kept in the cold. The article noted that during GFP’s Jan. 25th visit to 395 Spring Hill Rd for an outdoor adoption event the temperature was just 26° and some dogs could be seen shivering. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Dog Owners, Snow De-Icer Can Burn Your Dogs’ Paws

With Nika followed by Pax, followed by yet more snow, Greenwich with snow and storekeepers are out there with shovels and de-icer chemicals. Residents with sidewalks in front of their homes are responsible for clearing the walkways, which often results in lavishing more chemicals to burn through the snow to the asphalt.

For the dog owners among us, burned paws are familiar and upsetting. And although those dog booties are silly looking, your dog will thank you. (No he won’t really, but do it anyway).

Some products used to melt ice on driveways, roads and sidewalks can hurt dog paws. Continue Reading →

Erasing Traces of Nika to Make Room for Pax: Greenwich DPW Preps the Roads

For a week, walls of ice left over from Storm “Nika” lingered at the foot of driveways and in awkward blobs along side streets. Where parked cars  dug out just enough to drive away, obstacles left behind in the roadway wreaked havoc on bumpers and undercarriages. But it might have gotten worse with the anticipated 10″ of Pax snow en route. But on Wednesday, in anticipation of Storm “Pax,”  the rock hard piles of snow were no match for Greenwich’s road crews. Around noon the “L” streets — Lincoln, Lawrence and Lexington —  were paid a welcome visit by a trucks working in tandem with a smaller vehicle armed with a feature akin to a farmer’s rototill.
