Delayed GHS Start Time? Sleep Deprived-Students Nap While They Wait.

At the March Board of Education meeting pediatrician Rosa Fini, psychologist Beth O’Donnell, PhD, and parent Wheatleagh Dunham, all advocated for a delayed start to the school day at GHS, which currently starts at 7:30am. GHS junior Alex Buffone said sleep is at a premium after evenings spent on 4-5 hours of homework in addition to volunteering and sports, and that even teens who drive to school lose precious time in the daily traffic jam and looking for parking spots. Junior League of Greenwich Comes Through for Safe Rides to the Tune of $5,000

The Junior League of Greenwich has come through with a Community Grant of $5,000 to help get Safe Rides back up and running on a regular Friday and Saturday night schedule. The program, previously under the auspices of Red Cross was dropped when that organization decided to focus on its disaster relief efforts. Teens in the First Selectman’s Youth Commission have advocated loudly and tirelessly that the program was a life saver and worthy of being restored. The Junior League of Greenwich listened. Courage To Speak’s Drug Prevention Night Moves Audience To Tears

“I wish I could turn back the clock and bring Ian back to you and your family, but unfortunately I cannot do that,” said Demetri Dassouras of Nathan Hale Middle School in a letter to Ginger Katz that he shared with the audience. “What I can do is promise to encourage my friends and classmates to speak up if they know anyone who is using drugs… I am sure Ian can rest peacefully knowing that this mom and dad are doing everything they can to help other families have the courage to recognize and prevent this tragedy.” Continue Reading →

Big Turnout for Basketball Tourney Mirrors Hartleys’ Big Hearts

For several years now, the Hartleys, a Greenwich family, have been organizing a basketball tournament for their friends to raise money for various charities. The Harts4Jack Hoops Tournament started as a way to raise money for a service dog for a friend with Autism. Along the way they raised money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. On Thursday night hundreds of middle school boys, and a handful of girls, participated in the 2015 Hoops4Jack tournament to work toward making a wish come true for a child with a life threatening disease. By the end of the night, the first of two of the Hartley boys’ hoops tournament events, about $4,000 had been raised. Continue Reading →

Scouting For Food Drive is Hotbed of Activity Despite Deep Freeze in Greenwich

The Boy Scouts “Scouting for Food” drive is a well oiled machine in Greenwich, and Saturday morning was a great example of team work and communication. At the Cos Cob Fire House, Boy Scouts District Executive Kevin Piro worked alongside Kevin O’Connor and members of Troops 9 and 10 as a steady stream residents arrived with donations of food ranging from peanut butter to canned beans.
