North Street School’s international week featured an international pot luck dinner with dishes representing many of the 50 countries the children come from. Molly and Grace Wills, founders of The Waverly Project, led a special outing to Greenwich Dance Studio on Saturday. Girls in the Waverly Project become Waverly Girls when they sign up for educational field trips and service projects. On Saturday they met Kate Truesdell, founder and owner of the popular studio in Cos Cob. Truesdell, a longtime friend of the Wills sisters, was selected as an entrepreneurial role model who persevered for years until the dream of having her own dance studio in Greenwich became a reality. The goal of the field trips is to expose young girls to different careers and passions of local businesswomen, artists, and professionals. Continue Reading →
Registration is now open for the 2015 Westchester County Scholastic Chess Championship being held Saturday, March 14 at Iona Prep in New Rochelle. The tournament is open to area students from kindergarten through high school with sections organized based upon ability. The event is organized by the National Scholastic Chess Foundation and is part of its 2014-15 Grand Prix chess season which comprises over 20 events throughout Fairfield County and Westchester. Students do not have to be residents or attend school in Westchester County to participate; trophies are awarded to the top individual and team performers. In addition, the top player in each of seven grade categories who resides in or attends school in Westchester County will receive a plaque as Westchester County Scholastic Champion. The children in the Green Door Pre-K class at First Church Preschool put together dry soup mixes made from herbs from the school’s garden that they planted, harvested, and dried. Our Orange Door three-year-olds baked homemade bread to accompany the soup mixes. The bread and mixes were then donated to the Food Bank. Continue Reading →

On Sunday the First Selectman’s Youth Commission gathered in the conference room at Greenwich Police headquarters. Mr. Tesei was unable to attend, but Jenny Byxbee facilitated the meeting. For the most part, the students generate the ideas, and brainstorm goals and next steps. The agenda included guest speaker Caroll O’Connell from Fairfield County Community Foundation who put the work of her foundation in context of teenagers’ lives. When she asked the 15 teens at the commission meeting for suggestions for projects needing funding that would benefit teens, the brainstorming began. Continue Reading →
After a townwide naming contest, and a tight runoff between “Greenwich Grind” and “Teen Bean” a winner emerged. On Wednesday night teens from several public and private schools in Greenwich celebrated at the Arch Street Teen Center. The goal of the coffee house, which has a snack bar and a range of snack and beverage choices, is to extend to weekdays the selection of activities, which have been traditionally concentrated on weekends.
