At Greenwich Police HQ, CERT Class Graduates 47, the Envy of Neighboring Towns

There was a celebration at Greenwich Police headquarters on Wednesday night. While other towns have trouble filling their CERT classes, in Greenwich the turnout and number of graduates of the first-ever CERT training were large. The graduation of 47 citizens trained by Greenwich Police for the first-ever Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program was marked with the awarding of certificates, presentation of official CERT backpacks loaded with gear for emergencies, and the reciting of an oath that was both moving as well as legal inasmuch as it covered the citizens under Title 28 and would trigger workman’s compensation if necessary in the line of duty. After the certificates were presented, the entire 47 member CERT group posed for an official “class photo.” Beyond the CERT training, citizens were encouraged to explore Red Cross certifications and FEMA training, depending on areas of interest. Detective  Girard acknowledged in her presentation to the Father’s Forum on March 1st that parents may be reluctant to use monitoring software, or “Spyware.” Monitoring all a child’s text messages and social media posts is potentially exhausting. Children & Internet Safety: Friends with Strangers, Sexting, Facebook

Part 1 of 2-part feature
(Link to part 2: Internet Safety: Cyberbullying, Spyware, Parental Controls)

Greenwich Police Detective Christy Girard tackled the subject of children and Internet safety at this past Saturday’s Father’s Forum at the YMCA. Girard covered everything from grooming behavior of sexual predators to mean girl cyber-bullying on playdates, and elaborated on the multiple ways a child can get in trouble or become a victim. Lest a parent feel helpless about the treachery of predators and bullies targeting their children, Girard left parents a grab bag of tools and tricks at their disposal to keep even the most internet-savvy children safe. Who Are Your Kids Talking to?

Girard said predators work to earn a child’s trust and break them away from their parents. “You don’t know who you’re talking to, right?” Girard asked the audience at the Father’s Forum. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Art Society 97th Juried Exhibition Awards Announced

On Friday night, the Bendheim Gallery was again abuzz  over a new set of artwork and a mostly new set of artists eager for news. Whereas last Friday’s “match-up” event was suspenseful for artists hoping to have been selected by Greenwich Avenue businesses for the upcoming May Art to the Ave event, the Feb. 28 the reception kicked off the 97th annual juried exhibition that runs through March 28, 2014. The annual juried show is prestigious in the art community, but if there were any frayed nerves in the gallery, a string trio playing in the paneled gathering space along the main corridor soothed any stomach butterflies. An abundance of sushi, salmon, sandwiches and bite-sized dessert assortments, as well as wine was on offer, and local artists had a chance to mingle and meet others from nearby towns and New York City. One GHS Senior’s Reflections on Black History Month

The following speech was delivered by Alleyha Dannett, a member of Greenwich High School class of ’14 to the a gathering of government. In 1999, Will Smith, comedian, actor, and musical artist, had a song called Afro-Angel. In this song, he says, “Here I stand before you – brown. Color of the mountains Colossal as the earth Wrapped so deliciously within my own joy and misery Feathers of my wings paralyzed by the distance of my mind Here I stand before you, the color of the night Frozen by the potential of me.”
Hello all, for those of you who do not know me, my name is Alleyha Dannett, and I am a Senior here. I’ve lived in Greenwich, for about 8 years. Continue Reading →
