Audubon Greenwich “Sustainable Food & Farm Expo” Draws a Crowd

Audubon Greenwich’s Sustainable Food and Farm Expo  provided more than a whiff of spring. In addition to the tastings and how-to sessions, there were a couple dozen vendors who appealed not only to self-reliant DIY types, but to those who aspire to that lifestyle but just don’t have the time. DJ Haverkamp of Bedford Bee, is one such type. Haverkamp runs a honeybee service. Adopt-A-Dog Rescues Puppies from Uncertain Future in Deep South

Brian Gordiski has driven south to rescue dogs before. The trek to South Carolina trek is about 15 hours. But, his recent trip to Alabama was a 17 hours each way. Gordiski,  events coordinator for Adopt-A-Dog, the local rescue sanctuary organization, said he doesn’t mind the long drive, especially if one of his colleagues accompanies him in the Adopt-A-Dog van. “Having someone else saves me three or four hours that I’d spend cleaning,” Gordiski explained. Tiny New York Kitchen: Yogurt Twice Baked Potatoes

Here is a good meatless  dinner. Make sure to scrub potatoes well and rub with a bit of olive oil before baking. These potatoes go nicely with a green salad. INGREDIENTS

4 Medium Baking Potatoes (6 to 8 Ounces Each)
Olive Oil
1/2 Cup Plain Yogurt
1/2 Teaspoon Garlic Salt
1/2 Teaspoon Freshly Ground Pepper
2 Tablespoons Milk
3/4 Cup Finely Shredded Cheddar Cheese
3 Tablespoons Chives

Gun Control Rally at Greenwich Town Hall: Bicycles Are the Messengers

Twenty-six bicyclists pedaled their way from Ridgefield to Greenwich on Saturday with a message of peace, hope and love. Welcomed outside Town Hall by an enthusiastic crowd that numbered about 200, “Team 26,” whose name honors the 26 victims shot and killed on Dec. 15, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School, glided down Field Point Road in the balmy mid-day sunshine to hoots and whistles of the those seeking federal gun safety legislation. Team 26 included Congressman Jim Himes (D. District 4), Monte Frank, whose daughter’s third grade teacher Victoria Soto was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and Omar Samaha whose sister was killed in the shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007. Everything Dogs: Flex, Sydney and Annie

Sydney is an energetic young male, approximately 1 year old. He is has soft brindle fur and an impressive fluffy tail. Sydney’s personality is goofy and playful as a young adolescent, which would be perfect for people who are active and enjoy a spunky and curious dog who sometimes thinks he is a lap dog and will just park himself on our volunteers laps and be totally content. Sydney becomes attached to people who spend time him and enjoys all the attention he can get. He has not yet discovered the joy of playing with toys in our yard which can be a nice trait to have because we have also not seen a hint of chewing, destruction or mouthy behavior from this guy which is fantastic! Tiny New York Kitchen: Kale Salad With Apples And Pumpkin Seeds

For this stress-free kale salad mix the dressing a day ahead, then assemble the salad literally in minutes. INGREDIENTS

8 Ounces Stemmed & Chopped Kale
8 Tablespoons Olive Oil
4 Tablespoons Sherry Vinegar
Juice of 1 Lemon
2 Teaspoons Honey
1 Teaspoon Dijon Mustard
1 Cup Toasted Pumpkin Seeds
1/2 Cup Dried Cherries
1 Diced Apple
6 Ounces Grated Cheddar Cheese

In a large-size serving bowl, massage kale with 2 Tablespoon olive oil. In another bowl, whisk together remaining olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, honey, and mustard. Pour over kale; toss with toasted pumpkin seeds, cherries, diced apple and cheese. Serve immediately. Continue Reading →

Simply Smiles “Food & Folk” Event at Round Hill Church Set for Sunday

Round Hill Community Church is hosting “Food & Folk” on Sunday, March 9, from 5:00pm to 9:00pm to benefit Simply Smiles. The event, at Round Hill Community House, features an authentic Mexican buffet dinner and folk concert. The dinner will be followed by an intimate folk concert led by Kristen Graves, the 2013-2014 Connecticut State Troubadour. Simply Smiles is a Connecticut based not-for-profit organization dedicated to putting smiles on impoverished children’s faces.
