From Hen House to Farm House — Oh, Ricky, You’re So Fine!

By Leslie YagerEveryone who knows Kathy and John Augustin of Augustine’s Farm, knows that Kathy has a soft spot for animals and that Farmer John likes to pretend not to. “Dinner!” Farmer John likes to joke when Kathy rattles off the names of various breeds of chickens. Kathy hates to send the old roosters to the axe and keeps them in a section of the greenhouse, where they are safe and happy. Last July, Kathy sent away for 30 chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery in Iowa. Continue Reading →

Elton’s Café Takes to the Road: Serving Dinner at Pacific House

On Sunday night Elton Sousa and several of his friends from Greenwich Library, which houses the  restaurant bearing his name, Elton’s Cafe, traveled to Pacific House in Stamford to serve dinner to residents of the emergency homeless shelter.

When Elton arrived in Stamford, he was greeted by a full house, with about 100 men to serve. Having come prepared with two huge pots full of his homemade bean and vegetable soup, he donned a paper hat, and plastic gloves and apron and got to work ladling his hot soup into bowls. Other volunteers filled cups with ice and soda. Anita Lai who works at Community Answers, arrived with a main course of baked chicken, a side dish of rice and peas, and a dinner roll. Curiosity Concerts Strike a Chord with Greenwich Families

Billed as Curiosity Concerts, Shelly Cryer of the Greenwich Arts Council has created a hit with her series of one-hour classical music concerts for families with young children. This Sunday’s program was held at the Greenwich Arts Council on Greenwich Ave, though concerts in the series takes place at varying venues across town. Curiosity Concerts’ website, with its playful illustration by Greenwich’s own Lizzy Rockwell, is a destination for reservations, details on sponsors and making donations. Sunday’s interactive performance by Newman and Oltman Guitar Duo culminated in a little audience participation for a unique rendition of Beach Boys “Wipe Out.” Enjoying the performance were the Salib brothers of Greenwich — Alex, 7, who attends Parkway and William, 5, who attends Round Hill Nursery School. Greenwich Scouts Collect 6,000 Lbs of Food, Neighbor-to-Neighbor Grateful

Submitted to Greenwich Free Press by Nancy Coughlin, Executive Director of Neighbor to Neighbor

To the editor:

Neighbor to Neighbor would like to congratulate and thank the Greenwich Council, Boy Scouts of America for their tremendous success during their recent “Scouting for Food” drive benefiting Neighbor to Neighbor. Particularly at this time of year, food pantry shelves run bare. Yet thousands of Greenwich residents rely on us in every season for healthy food to feed their families and make ends meet. We are fortunate to have such dedicated young men, who collected over 6,000 pounds of food on March 1st. Thank you also to the Glenville, Cos Cob and Sound Beach Fire Departments and Christ Church Greenwich, for graciously acting as collection points. Continue Reading →
