Why Do Kids Use Drugs? GHS Guest Speaker Asks Tough Question

Ginger Katz visited Greenwich High School on Thursday to talk about her son, Ian. About 200 students filed into the auditorium and Wellness Teacher Kathy Steiner introduced Katz, who described her son as having had a big heart, which she attributed partly to his sister, Candace, who has Downs Syndrome. Ian went to Norwalk High School. He went to his prom, had a nice girlfriend and played lacrosse before going on to University of Hartford. But Ian also had a long battle with drugs before he died of an overdose in 1996 at the age of 20. Continue Reading →

“The Anonymous People” Documentary Screening at Town Hall. The Disease with No Cure Has a Solution.

The documentary “The Anonymous People” will be screened Thursday night (April 10) at Greenwich Town Hall  at 7:00pm. The film aims to redirect the addiction conversation from problems to solutions.  The 88 minute independent feature documentary is about the over 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions. As a culture we are still very rooted in “Just Say No,” even though addiction touches two out of three American families, untreated addiction has cost our economy hundreds of billions of dollars every year, and US jails and prisons are full of addicts and alcoholics. “Recovery is what you need, not prison,” says the voice over. The shame and secrecy are just as deadly as the disease itself,” says actress Kristen Johnson in the film. Continue Reading →

By Leslie Yager
Grim Reaper Day took place at Greenwich High School on Tuesday with 42 students playing the role of “ghosts” throughout the day. The program was an effort of the Outreach Club, which sponsors alcohol-free events with a goal of keeping kids safe in Greenwich, but was open to anyone pledging to remain silent the entire school day and forgo the use of their cell phone. About a half hour before the chaotic school dismissal, a few students were milling around the GHS entrance. Junior, Caysy Livia, said when she realized the placards were indeed true stories of deaths caused by risky behavior she was surprised, but dubious. “It doesn’t really change the way people behave,” Livia said.
