The GCDS Schwarz Campus is 41.5 acres in the RA-1 zone and the school does not receive any FAR bonus for educational use. The Schwarz Campus at 23 Fairfield Road was originally part of the F.A.O. Schwarz estate, which goes all the way to Cardinal Road. Even if the school added the requested units, they would still have remaining FAR, but the discussion revolved around the proposed multi-family apartment building in the RA-1 single family zone.

Do you need a great reason to shred old personal documents and financial statements on April 26th? Here are a few: Earth Day, Spring cleaning, paper recycling, protection from identity theft. That’s probably enough, but here’s another – an opportunity to donate to our local food pantry. * Cost to participate: Donate 1 can of Tuna or Fruit per box of paper, or $1/box
* Max: 8 boxes of paper per car, shredded on-site
* Shredding trucks will be at Island Beach parking lot April 26th, 9am to 1pm
* Paper shreds will be recycled
Spring cleaning doesn’t always include old files and dusty boxes of personal documents. Make it your 2014 mission. Continue Reading →
Good manners never go out of style. DeMuyshondt’s book is at its heart a primer on manners. Think Barclay classes, minus the dancing. Add a healthy dollop of Dale Carnegie’s timeless hit, “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Continue Reading →

The Earth Day month kicked-off on Sunday at Greenwich Point with nary a sign of winter. With a perfect blue sky and mild temps, the outdoor events included a first-Sunday bird walk, a beach cleanup and a dune grass planting. Meanwhile, the Floren Family Education Center inside the Innis Arden Cottage, was a hive of activity that culminated in an Earth Day proclamation read by Selectman David Theis. The beach cleanup project was spearheaded by the Sound Waters interns and Sound Waters educator, Amy Arent. Ellen Hebrand, a Sound Waters intern who is a junior at Darien High School, said she and her fellow interns hail from Greenwich, Stamford and Darien. Continue Reading →

For days Blue’s dog walker didn’t see him in the apartment building and grew concerned. After remembering that Blue’s owner sometimes tied him to the roof, the dog walker went there to have a look. Blue had been left tied out on the roof in the pouring rain. The dog walker later found out that Blue’s owner had died in a car accident. Now this owner had a shady past and our friend, and hero, the dog walker opted to bring Blue into his small apartment in the South Bronx where he was watching another woman’s pit bull and caring for his own poodle and cat. Members of the Greenwich High School YNET club set up outside the Senior Center on Saturday to spread their message “Love Shouldn’t Hurt” in person, on frisbees, rubber wrist bands and pens. In addition, the girls were giving out water bottles imprinted with the slogan “Say no to teen dating violence,” donated by the Greenwich Police Department. Volunteering their Saturday morning were GHS senior Marley MacDougall, freshman Lily McKenna, junior Grace DiChristina, junior Julia Marache, junior Isabelle Madoff and junior Lauren Mahr. The girls were also accepting donations which would go to further prevention of teen dating violence. According to MacDougall, who has been involved with the club for all for years at GHS, “We’re a club at GHS students who work with YWCA domestic abuse services to prevent teen dating violence in Greenwich and beyond.” Continue Reading →
1.) It’s always gratifying when a simple, happy story gets a lot of clicks on Greenwich Free Press. April Fool’s Day Draws a Crowd to Rummage Room was a hit and readers shared the story on social media after the Pastors at First Congregational Church of Greenwich and Rummage Room volunteers took up residence in the store windows on Tuesday. 2.) Easter is around the corner. Every year, thousands of bunnies and chicks are purchased as Easter gifts. After the holiday many are released into back yards by people who assume they’ll survive.
