The Night Sky: Jupiter

By Rick Bria

Jupiter can be found high in the southeast sky just after dark. It looks like a very bright star in the constellation Gemini, but viewed through a telescope Jupiter reveals its true nature as a huge gas giant planet with swirling bands of clouds and four Galilean moons. This picture of Jupiter was taken January 10, 2014 at the Mary Aloysia Hardey Observatory at Convent of the Sacred Heart. I used a 16” LX200 telescope with a Canon DSLR camera in movie crop mode. The resultant data was processed in RegiStax6 and Photoshop software. Continue Reading →

Congratulations to the Pee Wee B team for winning a Bronze Medal at the CHE Lake Placid Tournament. Even though the team began the tournament rather slowly, they continued to improve, building momentum and definitely brought their “A” game to the medal round. By Victoria Hart Glavin of Tiny New York Kitchen

We all know that we should eat more vegetables throughout the year, but often times we think of winter vegetables as humdrum, which is actually not the case. These cold weather-loving vegetables are harvested during winter months and can be enjoyed in a variety of dishes. Fennel: This sweet, anise-flavored vegetable has an edible bulb, stalk, leaves, and seeds. It is often used raw in salads or sautéed or braised in savory dishes. Broccoli Rabe: A member of the mustard family, broccoli rabe has a bitter flavor, and both the leaves and the broccoli-like stems are edible. Continue Reading →

More Snow for Greenwich, More Snow Citizenship Fails

The misplaced optimism of one Californian visiting Greenwich during  Storm Nika was amusing. Until it wasn’t. Message to out-of-town guests: Waiting for the snow to melt is not a strategy. The morning after the storm, when snow was slushy, but shovelable, the owner of this Mercedes with California plates demurred. By Friday night the car had a $55.00 parking ticket and thick casing of ice. Continue Reading →
