Up to 14″ of Snow Coming to Greenwich: How You Can Help During the Snow Emergency

Message from the Town of Greenwich, Feb. 12:

During the period of the Snow Emergency no vehicles are permitted to remain parked, stopped or standing on any Snow Emergency streets.  Vehicles in violation will be subject to ticketing and immediate towing.  If you are unsure if your vehicle is parked on a Snow Emergency street, a full list can be viewed HERE.  Vehicles displaced from Snow Emergency streets may be lawfully parked in municipal off-street parking lots until the snow emergency is over. Even if you do not live or work on a snow emergency street, if you have off-street parking available for your vehicle, you are encouraged to use it during and after the storm.  Snow and ice accumulations from previous storms are already narrowing some roadways.  It is much easier for Public Works to fully clean the street without vehicles parked in their way.  Your cooperation will ensure that road crews can keep all streets open for emergency First Responder vehicle traffic. Further, with all of the winter weather and cold temperatures many fire hydrants are becoming obstructed under unmelted snow and ice.  The Town is encouraging those who have a fire hydrant on or near their property to help keep it visible and accessible.  Ready access to water for firefighting can be a true lifesaver when seconds count. The latest predictions indicate that we should receive at least six and as many as fourteen inches of additional snow accumulation over the next 24 to 36 hours.  Icing conditions on walkways, roads, trees and power lines may become problematic especially late in the day tomorrow.  Obviously, residents should restrict travel during the storm only to essential trips. Erasing Traces of Nika to Make Room for Pax: Greenwich DPW Preps the Roads

For a week, walls of ice left over from Storm “Nika” lingered at the foot of driveways and in awkward blobs along side streets. Where parked cars  dug out just enough to drive away, obstacles left behind in the roadway wreaked havoc on bumpers and undercarriages. But it might have gotten worse with the anticipated 10″ of Pax snow en route. But on Wednesday, in anticipation of Storm “Pax,”  the rock hard piles of snow were no match for Greenwich’s road crews. Around noon the “L” streets — Lincoln, Lawrence and Lexington —  were paid a welcome visit by a trucks working in tandem with a smaller vehicle armed with a feature akin to a farmer’s rototill. Town of Greenwich Pax Prep: Prepare to Shelter in Place, Power Outages

Winter storm “PAX” is predicted to affect our area this week possibly bringing significant snowfall, causing low visibility, dangerous road conditions and unhealthy cold temperatures.  It is not advisable to go outdoors or travel during this storm. Residents needing assistance may contact the Town of Greenwich non‑emergency phone number at Public Safety. Dispatch (203) 622-8003. If it is an EMERGENCY, CALL 911. Natural disasters like snow storms can occur at any time during the winter months, so the Town of Greenwich is reminding all residents to be prepared.  With today’s changing weather patterns, it is as important to be prepared for emergencies of all kinds.   Certainly Hurricane Sandy taught us this valuable lesson.  While government does its part in preparing for disasters, personal action and responsibility is needed.  Part of being prepared is deciding on whether you should ride out a storm event or relocate for safety.  This decision should be based upon your personal needs and available resources. Born in Time for Valentine’s Day

By Courtney Oar, GHS Class of ’14

Despite the recent stow away of nutcrackers and dreams of sugar plum fairies we are never too far behind on ringing in the next holiday. Valentines day- though it is so blatantly a Hallmark holiday never ceases to be one of my personal favorite occasions. I’ve always held a close connection to this holiday due in part to the fact that I was born on February the 13th particular week was always the most glamorized period of time because of all the great things that happened for me within it like, the candy and presents I received. As I find myself maturing Valentines Day starts to take on a new meaning, the only appropriate words to define it seem to be first and forever. The history of forever binds together all the power couples of the world such as, John and Yoko, Anthony and Cleopatra, Will and Kate. Continue Reading →

Valentine’s Day is Also “Happy Heart Week”

Every February I write an informative letter about “Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.” Inspired by the Congenital Heart Information Network, the intention has been to honor heart children and adults navigating life and the medical system, commemorate brave individuals who have fought and passed, offer resources to families, and encourage community action and funding that will ensure the healthy future I expect for my daughter Cora and her heart peers. In reproducing the list of resources, I send thanks for the advocacy and support we have appreciated for the last eight years, and for the ability to share these services. In recent years Cora’s name has been absent in an attempt to balance advocacy and respect for her privacy. Cora has become proud of her heart and has expressed interest in sharing her own story in the hope of helping others, knowing the support she has received from incredible medical staff, volunteers, family and friends. Merritt Parkway Plaza in Greenwich, Southbound, Open as of Noon Tuesday

What is it about rest stops on major highways like I-95 and the Merritt Parkway that you don’t appreciate them until they’re gone? The corollary to that truth is that you really appreciate them when they reopen. That was the case Tuesday at the rest stop on the Merritt Parkway in Greenwich just before the King Street exit and the New York state line. The plaza  re-opened at noon after a lengthy renovation that started in November of 2012. Until Tuesday, travelers on the Merritt could stop in New Canaan or hold their peace for 13 miles into New York. Continue Reading →

Then hole punch two holes at the top and string them all together with festive ribbon.
