Okay, snow is in the forecast and we’re sick of it, but, here is the good news: “Snow” is a super dog. She is just down on her luck. She was adopted from the shelter but the landlord forbade the owner from keeping her. She is a good, loyal girl who needs a chance. Here are some photos. Continue Reading →

Tattoo Your Dog to Spare Him from the “Buncher”? Theta Gamma Nu?

Roger is a five year old Lab-mix from Tennessee who was transported to Norwalk by a rescue group, fostered by a family in Norwalk and adopted by the editor of Greenwich Free Press three weeks ago. Roger is a fabulous dog. He is well behaved, happy and smart. Apparently his previous owner died and in the care of his owner’s surviving family he became ravaged by fleas and lost his hair. Most of Roger’s hair has since grown back, but he has bald spots. Continue Reading →

Everything Dogs: Poppy the Poodle Says Orange is the New Black

Weighing in at just 6 lbs, meet Poppy. Poppy (short for poppyseed?) is a tiny ten-year-old male toy poodle who is looking for someone to spend the next half of his life with.

Poppy is very friendly. He likes both other small dogs and cats.  And he is wee-wee pad trained. He might just be the perfect dog in a tiny black non-shedding package.  He is being fostered here in Greenwich.
He will be at Pet Pantry in Greenwich Saturday, Feb. Continue Reading →

ACO Judy Umstead: It’s Hard to Keep up With Fred Acker’s Lies

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, Animal Control Officer Judy Umstead addressed multiple criticisms meted out by Fred Acker of SPCA of Connecticut. In a Feb. 14 GFP feature, “A Conversation with Fred Acker, Former Director of SPCA of Connecticut,” Acker accused Umstead of profiteering from his misfortune, stealing three of his dogs and dragging out the legal process at the expense of the 60+ dogs seized from his rescue organization. Reached by phone, Umstead  answered questions with questions. Continue Reading →

A Conversation with Fred Acker, Former Director of SPCA of Connecticut

On Wednesday Fred Acker, the former director of SPCA of Connecticut, contacted Greenwich Free Press (GFP) by phone to respond to the article, “Convicted of Animal Cruelty: Still ‘Rescuing’ Dogs” originally published on Feb. 3. Acker said he was sensitive to the subject of animals being kept in the cold. The article noted that during GFP’s Jan. 25th visit to 395 Spring Hill Rd for an outdoor adoption event the temperature was just 26° and some dogs could be seen shivering. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Dog Owners, Snow De-Icer Can Burn Your Dogs’ Paws

With Nika followed by Pax, followed by yet more snow, Greenwich with snow and storekeepers are out there with shovels and de-icer chemicals. Residents with sidewalks in front of their homes are responsible for clearing the walkways, which often results in lavishing more chemicals to burn through the snow to the asphalt.

For the dog owners among us, burned paws are familiar and upsetting. And although those dog booties are silly looking, your dog will thank you. (No he won’t really, but do it anyway).

Some products used to melt ice on driveways, roads and sidewalks can hurt dog paws. Continue Reading →

What’ll You Do with Your Pets Come the Next Disaster?

After Treepocalypse in March of 2010 and then Hurricanes Irene in August 2011 and Sandy in October 2012, I’ve know I would never leave my dogs behind in an emergency. But beyond upgrading my flashlight to a camping lantern and buying a big dog crate, I can’t say I’ve readied myself, much less my dogs for disaster. And yet the parade of severe weather emergencies marches on. “The Pet Emergency & Disaster Readiness Course being offered by GEMS and benefiting Adopt-A-Dog is a logical start,” said Adopt-A-Dog’s Director Allyson Halm. Learn how to be prepared when the unthinkable happens.  The course will be held on Thursday, Feb. Continue Reading →

Why Do Greenwich Moms Volunteer at Mt. Vernon Animal Shelter? Greenwich Doesn’t Want Them

Tina Aronson and Kerri Ann Hofer have a great deal in common. Their children  attended North Street School and Central Middle School and Greenwich High School. Both moms  adore dogs and are dedicated to helping them. Initially, both Aronson and Hofer were discouraged because when they looked for a way to help homeless dogs and cats in Greenwich, they learned Greenwich Animal Control does not allow volunteer dog walkers. Not ones to be discouraged, the two Greenwich moms joined forces with Cat Assistance, a non-profit based in Ardsley, NY that rescues both cats and dogs and has a network of foster homes.
