Dog Dilemma: Connecticut Shelter Dogs and the Southern Squeeze

There are so many unwanted dogs in the south, and so many puppies, that the rescue community has mobilized to help them find northern homes. But what about the pit bull type dogs that languish in municipal shelters in places like Waterbury, Bridgeport, Stamford, Mt. Vernon and even here in Greenwich. Are these innocent southern dogs hurting the chances of dogs in local shelters? Continue Reading →

The Skye’s the Limit: Dream Big and Your Wishes Will Come True!

Here in Greenwich where most people are forever doting on their dogs, counting down the days til “beach season for dogs,” and calling the police when a dog is left in a car on a hot day (as they should), it’s hard to imagine the cruelty owners inflict on their dogs — Fighting them, over breeding them, neglecting them.  And, admittedly, it’s a downer that few people want to read about. But everyone likes a happy ending. Maybe that’s why the story of Gino’s rescue by NYPD cops in a Bronx cemetery, and his happy welcome in a loving home in Darien, got thousands of page views and heaps of Facebook likes. As an editor it’s incredibly satisfying when a reader fosters or adopts a dog we feature. Tina Aronson of Greenwich, has a tremendous track record in finding homes for dogs and occasionally she’ll appeal to us to feature a dog on Greenwich Free Press. Continue Reading →

Homeless in Cos Cob: Blue and Max’s Owner Went into Assisted Living

Local Pets Need New Homes
Earlier this week a local Cos Cob woman was moved to an assisted living facility leaving behind her two beloved pets. Blue is a friendly (but scared) eight year old neutered, declawed cat.  He is used to living with a very mellow dog. Max is a very mellow six year old neutered Shih Tzu. He is good with cats and prefers a quieter  household (no young kids please).  He does not require a lot of exercise — he prefers to follow you around the house instead of going for a walk.  He would be ideal for someone looking for a non-shedding low-maintenance dog. They were taken under the care of Cat Assistance NY,  and do not have to find a home together, although that would be great!  For more information about either of these pets please contact Kerri Ann at [email protected]. New York City police spotted this Old English Bulldog in a cemetery and he ran to them when they called out. He jumped into their patrol car and responded to their kindness. They couldn’t bring themselves to deliver Gino to the city shelter. Unsuccessful at finding owners, cops reached out to Tina in Greenwich. Underweight, neglected, but deserving. Meet Gino.
