PHOTOS: Adults Pinewood Derby Social at Miller Motorcars Adds a Twist to the Annual Cub Scout Event

This weekend Miller Motorcars on East Putnam Ave was the ideal venue for Greenwich Scouting’s annual Pinewood Derby, but there was a twist in the form of an evening social and race just for adults on the eve of the Cub Scouts event.

The popularity of the annual Scouting event had sparked the idea for “the Pinewood Derby Social” fundraiser for adults 21 and over on Saturday night.

Kevin O’Shea, Scout Executive said, “Building a pinewood derby car is one of the highlights of the year for our Scouting families.  Each year, parents help their children like their parents helped them growing up.”

With two race classes – Traditional and No Holds Barred – the event on Saturday night gave derby fans the opportunity to design a car and race in the iconic Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Race.

During February, Cub Scouts cut, sand and decorate a 7-inch wood block into a Pinewood Derby car and raced them on a 32-ft digital track at Seton Scout Reservation.

The top 3 racers from each local Cub Scout pack competed in Sunday’s championship race at Miller Motorcars.

“It was much more than a typical Saturday date night,” said Eric Lindberg, Council President and Event Chair.  “There was great food, good friends and the excitement of the Pinewood Derby.”

Lindberg and his wife Trish, who were sponsors of the event, thanked other sponsors, including RPM Speedway, Natalie Pray, Carolyn Dempsey Design, and Ultimate Beverage, and gave extra thanks to Miller Motorcars for hosting the memorable evening of fast cars.

The winners of Saturday night’s event for adults were:

Traditional Race: Alex Qu
No Holds Barred Race: David Hall
Best in Show: Bob Langelius

Each Cub Scout Pack sent their top three finishers to Sunday’s competition. The winners of the Council Championship were:

1st – James Henry Pack 35
2nd – Owen Kennedy Pack 35
3rd – Miguel Orr Pack 20
4th – James Kennedy Pack 35
Best in Show – Jacob Tirana Pack 3

Adventure, leadership, service and learning, especially in the outdoors, have remained essential to the Greenwich Scouting experience since its inception in 1912.

Nearly 1,750 local youth participate in programs, such as the Pinewood Derby, run by dedicated volunteers, all of which help prepare local boys and girls for life. With over 20 partnering organizations and Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Exploring opportunities in Greenwich, Connecticut, there’s never been a better time to join the Scouting community.
