With Antisemitism on the Rise, Students Gather to Hear Holocaust Survivor’s Inspiring Story

With antisemitism on the rise, high school students from various schools in Greenwich came together for the fourth installment of the Israel Odyssey series, hosted at a private residence in Greenwich.

This event, geared toward fostering understanding and empathy among youth, featured Holocaust survivor Judith Kallman, whose remarkable story of survival continues to inspire generations.

Judith Kallman, who endured the Holocaust as a small child, has dedicated her life to sharing her experiences, believing that speaking out can combat hatred and make the world a better place. Her book, A Candle in the Heart, chronicles her journey and serves as a beacon of resilience and hope.

The timing of this event, after the Iranian attack on Israel and before the Jewish Holiday of Passover, resonated deeply with the attendees, highlighting the ongoing importance of remembering the Holocaust and honoring the survivors. Kallman’s message of perseverance and faith struck a chord with the students, particularly when she shared, “Hope and faith are our survival.”

Representatives from six different high schools were present at the gathering, including Greenwich Country Day School, Greenwich High School, The Harvey School, Greenwich Academy, Rye Country Day School, and Scarsdale High School. The diverse participation underscored the universal relevance of Kallman’s story and the significance of learning from the past to shape a better future.

The event was part of the larger Israel Odyssey series, which aims to educate and engage high schoolers on various aspects of Israeli culture, history, and contemporary issues. By providing platforms for dialogue and learning from firsthand accounts like Judith Kallman’s, the series fosters a deeper understanding of the complexities of our world and the importance of tolerance and respect.

As these students continue their educational journey, events like the Israel Odyssey series serve as invaluable opportunities to broaden their perspectives, honor the past, and work toward a more inclusive and compassionate future.
