PHOTOS, VIDEO: North Street School’s Has Sticky Celebration of “Pennies for Patients” Drive

On Friday afternoon students at North Street School had the culminating event of their “Pennies for Patients” drive to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

According to assistant principal Kathleen Ramirez the kids all looked in the nooks and crannies of their homes for pennies and loose change. Ramirez said it’s a challenge to find a school wide event bringing everyone together from five-year-olds up to 12-year-olds. The penny drive and taping the principal to wall was the perfect idea.

“Kids could bring in ten pennies or ten dollars,” she said. “It was something everyone could do. And the kids are so excited because they think it’s so hysterical to see the principal taped to the wall.”

“It’s all based on the norm care for self and others,” Ramirez said. “Students here have a lot of empathy and this ties into social and emotional learning.”

Principal Flood said she hopes the kids learn how lucky they are and how important it is to give back.

“You are paying money for science to help kids who are sick get better,” said Mary Pat Caldwell, a teacher at North Street School.

The goal of the Pennies for Patients drive was $4,000, which was met and surpassed. Well done!
