Greenwich’s Katie DeLuca Is Nominee for Man/Woman of the Year from The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Every year The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society accepts a nomination for their Man and Woman of the Year fundraising campaign.

This year, Katie DeLuca, Town Planner for Town of Greenwich, was accepted as a candidate.

Katie lost her husband Larry to a rare form of leukemia in December 2019.

“Sadly, all of us know somebody that has been inflicted with the nightmare that is cancer.  I’m still traumatized by the memories of having to say goodbye.  It was this pain that led me to want to get involved with a fundraising effort in Larry’s honor,” DeLuca said.

The campaign is open between March 4 and May 13, and during this time Team Larry will raise funds, which will go directly to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in support of its long-standing goal: a world without blood cancers.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helped advance 60 of the 71 blood cancer treatment options approved by the US Food and Drug Administration since 2017, leading to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics and personalized medicine that are improving and saving the lives of patients.

Many of these Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are now approved to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers, and noncancerous diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases.

They’re even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers, and noncancerous diseases such as diabetes and lupus.

“If we raise at least $50,000 as a team, we can link Larry’s name to an Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-funded research portfolio to honor him and our efforts to help people with blood cancers. But the aspirations of the team are much greater than that,” DeLuca said.

A number of local businesses have agreed to put up a sign about the fundraiser with a QR code.
