A water leak on December 1 in the Greenwich High School gymnasium drew a quick a response from the basketball community. During the Dec 12 Board of Education meeting, a basketball team captain and coach lamented loss of use of the gymnasium during their short season as a result of the leak.
In response the Greenwich Schools superintendent Dr. Toni Jones said the leak was beyond the district’s control, and explained that a chilled water coil and pre-heat coil in the rooftop unit had not drained completely and subsequently froze and burst.
This week, a letter was distributed to basketball families from the GHS athletic director Peter Georgiou and principal Ralph Mayo.
The letter, which was sent on Tuesday, Dec 17, gave an update on the status of the gym and plans impacting student-athletes.
“Thanks to the quick action of our local facilities team, the leak was managed immediately, minimizing the damage,” the letter said. “But the following day, a floor engineer assessed the situation and explained to us that the damage will get exceedingly worse that could put our athletes in danger.”
In their letter Mr. Georgiou and Mr. Mayo said that since the floor engineer’s assessment, plans were coordinated with the GPS facilities team to put together a timeline, order materials, and expedite the process to repair the floor.
Work on the gym floor was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Dec 18, and continue through the Holiday Recess.
The work is anticipated to be completed by January 14 if there are no delays.
In the meantime, Mr. Georgiou and Mr. Mayo said they were actively working to secure alternative locations for games and practices to minimize disruptions.
“Our primary focus is to keep the boys’ and girls’ freshman teams at GHS, allowing them to start practices immediately after school,” the letter said. “We are committed to doing everything we can to provide our student-athletes with the best possible experience under the circumstances.”
