At GHS Unified Sports Finishes Basketball Season in High Spirits

On Thursday Greenwich High School’s Unified Sports had their last home basketball game of the season and celebrated seniors. The Cardinals played the Darien Blue Wave in an exciting game that had Greenwich in the lead during the first half, Darien ahead at times, but ultimately ended in a tie score.

Highlights of the game, which was emceed by Max Marek, were half time free throws with both students and staff participating, and GHS cheerleaders encouraged both teams.  Parents – many waving giant faces of their seniors – were invited to pose with their children at half time.

The Unified Sports program started at GHS back in 2010. Now, under the direction of PE teacher Deirdre Burke, the program has grown in popularity and on Thursday the bleachers brimmed with friends and family.

For coach Burke, who has described Unified Sports as her “passion project,” the program is a way to offer a positive, inclusive foundation for athletic and social interaction between special education and general education students in the school and community.

Greenwich High School currently has more participants than any other Unified Sports program in the state, with over 60 players involved each season.
