The purpose of the project is to replace and upgrade the railroad signal power infrastructure on Metro North Railroad, New Haven Line signal substations at Cos Cob (Sub 309) and Fair Street (Sub 1091).
The power generation equipment at these stations have reached the end of their useful lives. The technology and equipment are outdated, unreliable, and impacts rail services.
Design for both substations is expected to be finalized in Summer 2024. Construction is anticipated to begin at both substations in February 2025 based on the availability of funding and approval of permit(s).
In Cos Cob, the Dept of Transportation said there are expected to be minor, short-term impacts to the sidewalk, parking lot, and short-term partial travel lane closures at Sound Shore Drive during construction.
Construction is expected to be completed at both substations in November 2026.
