Joey B’s in Cos Cob Recognized for Delicious Chili

Joey B’s has chalked up another accolade. This January the popular eatery was named best Chili in Connecticut by Eat This, Not That, who compiled a nationwide list ranking restaurants in every state based on Yelp reviews. From there, IHeartRadio featured Joey B’s chili on its website in February.

Owner Dom Delfino explained that his chili can be requested as a spicy topping or ordered by the bowl in a version that includes beans.

Patrons request the spicy topping chili on everything from omelettes and breakfast sandwiches to hot dogs and Philly Steaks.

By the bowl, the chili is served hot and includes beans. Suggested toppings include sour cream, onions and cheese.

On a cold afternoon in March, with sleet and snow in the forecast, a hot bowl of chili is pure comfort food. Spring can wait!

Located in the heart of Cos Cob at 118 River Rd Extension, the small restaurant’s modest exterior belies its extensive menu.

Both for residents across Greenwich, and even drivers on I95 searching their phones for a convenient stop on their way into the city, Joey B’s is a popular destination.

Delfino said the restaurant came through pandemic in good shape thanks to loyal customers and steady take-out orders. Today, with mask mandates largely lifted, the stools at the counter are consistently occupied, with many customers ordering up their favorites.

It’s no surprise Joey B’s won best chili in Connecticut, once you read the Yelp reviews:

“Rich M” wrote, “Had the opportunity to eat here twice this past week while Cos Cob. The food was incredible! Do yourself a favor and order the chili! Dom and the crew are absolutely crushing it!”

“Dave G” praised The Hash breakfast sandwich, which he described as inventive. Served on a wedge, The Hash comes with over easy eggs, corned beef hash, cheese and Chili.

“I added a crispy hash brown for good measure,” Dave G wrote, adding, “The crunch makes the sandwich IMHO.”

Delfino said he was also pleased that in the hot dog category, Joey B’s made it to the finals in Moffly Media’s Best of the Gold Coast Connecticut 2022 contest. Voting continues until March 18. (To vote, click here).

Beyond hot dogs and chili, menu favorites include the Friday Fish Fry featuring choices of clam strips, fish & chips, and shrimp & chips.

Steak Tid Bits are also very popular even though Delfino said the sandwich is a secret menu item.

The sandwich is served on a toasted garlic wedge with New York Strip Steak Tid Bits, melted American cheese and CFOs, short for crispy fried onions. You won’t find it on the menu, so remember to ask for Tid Bits with CFOs.

Other perennial favorites include the Philly cheese steak wedge, with served with chili, cheese and fried onions.

Justin’s Salad” is named after longtime employee Justin Currytto, who started working at Joey B’s when he was 16.

Also, Joey B’s is known for their best milk shakes, made from real ice cream.

Lomo Thursdays are popular because chef Paul prepares Lomo Saltado. Originally from Peru, Paul makes the traditional dish from marinated strips of steak with onions, tomatoes, french fries, brown sauce and Paul’s special Ahi sauce.

At Joey B’s Lomo lovers have the option of beef, shrimp or chicken. Be advised the Lomo with beef usually runs out on Thursdays, so consider calling ahead.

Delfino said in addition to Paul, his longtime crew includes Joey, April, Justin and of course Dom’s wife Lu. Also, Dom and Lu’s son Lorenzo works on weekends and when he’s home from college.

What’s new at Joey B’s? Delfino said he’s looking forward to spring and expects his outdoor dining to again be popular.

Also, he looks forward doing cross promotions with Mike Geller who plans to open “Mike’s Organic” market next door in the former Patio.com building this summer.

The restaurant is open until 8:00pm on Thursdays and Fridays.
