Affordable Handyman of Greenwich: From Everyday Repairs to Holiday Lights

In Cos Cob, Joey B’s is a small restaurant with big menu and a lot of loyal patrons.

This week, owner Dom Delfino was pleased with a new holiday light installation by Jobson Chrisostomo, whose company, Affordable Handyman of Greenwich, has expanded its services.

As cars waited for the light at the busy intersection of East Putnam Ave and River Road Ext during evening rush hour, Joey B’s, known for award-winning hot dogs and chili, was aglow despite the fog.

Mr. Chrisostomo, a regular at Joey B’s, said his company’s services include everything from patch & paint to power washing. And now he is certified to install holiday lighting.

Delfino, who had hired Chrisostomo to do some work at his restaurant, said he had jumped at the suggestion of adding holiday lights.

“He came and power washed outside the restaurant and when he suggested the lights I thought it was a great idea. He’s doing all the work. I love it,” Delfino said.

As Mr. Chrisostomo enjoyed his favorite BLT at dinner time, he shared his story. He is Brazilian, though his last name is Greek, and his family came to Stamford when he was 11. Chrisostomo went through public schools, graduating from Westhill before his parents moved to Cos Cob.

In his 20’s Chrisostomo was a professional downhill mountain bike racer, but after a decade of success punctuated by concussions and a broken leg, his wife encouraged him to pursue a new career.

From there, Chrisostomo worked for a local contractor where projects ran the gamut and, as he explained this week, “I learned how to do everything.”

When the economy turned in 2008 and he was laid off, Chrisostomo was able to find work as a handyman immediately.

“I love what I do,” he said. “It’s been crazy busy lately.”

Chrisostomo, who now has two toddlers, employs his wife and his father, a professional painter, plus two other employees and occasional subcontractors for plumbing and electrical work.

Most customers are in Greenwich, but Chrisostomo’s company is busy in Darien and Stamford as well.

They do 6-7 jobs a day and take advantage of apps like Workiz for added efficiency.

And as Chrisostomo explained, “We area obsessed with keeping a house clean. We take our shoes off. We have the best tools – our sander is attached to a vacuum. And we treat people’s houses like they’re our own.”

The proof is in the pudding and Chrisostomo is proud he has 83 five-star Google reviews and the coveted blue checkmark.

Asked what are the typical handyman jobs in Greenwich, Chrisostomo shared a running list off the top of his head: painting, finish framing, power washing and “soft-washing,” furniture assembly, hole in the wall/sheetrock repair, deck flooring and railing repair, gutter cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, re-caulking bathrooms, replacing light bulbs, shoring up cabinets, fixing bathroom hardware.

What’s next for Chrisostomo? Since his exterior washing services have become so popular – power washing and soft washing – he’s adding a trash bin cleaning service based on the dinosaurs his children love. He’s calling it Binosaurs.
