Greenwich Council, Scouting America: Cub-O-Ree 2025 is an Adventure Into the Wild

By Emilia Shiro, Event Coordinator, Greenwich Scouting

The much-anticipated Cub-O-Ree, held on Saturday, June 7, at Ernest Thompson Seton Scout Reservation, was a thrilling success despite the unpredictable weather. On a day filled with rain, the spirit of adventure and camaraderie among the Cub Scouts remained undeterred. This year’s theme, “Adventure Into the Wild,” brought out the best of what Scouting is all about: resilience, learning, and fun, even when the weather didn’t quite cooperate.

The day began with the Opening Ceremony, led by Jim Heavey, ASM T35, as we raised the Flag, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and prepared the Cub Scouts with a hint of the Adventure. One of the main attractions of the day was the shooting sports activity. Cub Scouts were able to practice their skills in a safe, controlled environment with trained instructors guiding them every step of the way. It wasn’t just about hitting the target — it was a valuable exercise in listening, following instructions, and developing patience. The Cub Scouts focused on honing their skills while learning the importance of safety and responsibility in these types of activities.

At the Nature Center, the rain didn’t dampen the excitement of exploring the wild world. Cub Scouts gathered around an observation hive (under careful supervision) to learn about the incredible role bees play in our ecosystem. Cubs also were introduced to the cutest of creatures, baby chicks, which added a touch of warmth to the chilly day. The interactive lessons sparked curiosity and wonder, making learning about nature both fun and memorable.

The day wasn’t all about physical challenges. There were also opportunities to test and sharpen mental skills. One popular activity was KIM’S GAME, a memory exercise where ten items were spread out on a table for the Cubs to observe for 20 seconds. Then the items were covered, and the Cubs had to recall and list as many as they could. This game helped foster focus, memory, and quick thinking, with plenty of laughs and friendly competition along the way!

As the rain grew heavier, the Cubs sought shelter indoors at the Malcolm Pray Building, where they enjoyed a variety of games and activities to keep the energy UP. The warm, welcoming environment allowed everyone to dry off and refuel with some classic Cub Scout food — HOT DOGS! The sense of camaraderie grew as Cubs worked together to play games and enjoy the break before heading back out for more fun.

The day ended with an awesome Campfire Ceremony spearheaded by Craig Jones, Eagle Scout and Den leader for Pack 20, and Rick Baxley, Eagle Scout and Cubmaster of Pack 9. The ceremony highlighted the true spirit of Scouting with skits and songs which allowed Cub Scouts to showcase their creativity and teamwork in front of their peers and family!

After the Campfire, Cub Scouts were led on a night hike by Cubmaster Rick Baxley — Into the Wild. Upon returning to their campsite, Cub Scouts concluded the evening with — of course — SMORES! Then it was LIGHTS OUT, accompanied by “Taps,” Shout out to the units that spent the night only to wake up with “REVEILLE” and headed to the Malcolm Pray Building for a Pancake Breakfast.

Cub-O-Ree 2025 was a perfect example of how the Cub Scouts make the most of any situation — rain or shine. Whether out on the range, exploring nature, or playing games with friends, the Cubs embraced each activity with enthusiasm and joy. The event was a reminder that the true SPIRIT of Scouting isn’t just about the activities themselves but about the memories made, the lessons learned, and the friendships forged along the way!

SUMMER CAMP AT CAMP SETON is just around the corner, and all these activities are held during the five-week Summer Camp Program starting July 7th.
