Junior League of Greenwich Provides School Supplies for 50 Greenwich Public School Children Entering Kindergarten

The Junior League of Greenwich provided 50 incoming Greenwich Schools Kindergarten children with backpacks and school supplies.

The backpacks were presented to Jennifer Bencivengo, the summer school coordinator, at North Mianus School on July 20, for those children attending the summer enrichment program. Recipients of the supplies qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Children ages 3-5 years old gathered in the gymnasium for the presentation and a book reading by Casey Simmons, a member of the Junior League of Greenwich and co-chair of the project.

The Junior League of Greenwich partnered with Kits for Kidz, an assembler and distributor of school supply kits, backpacks, bulk products, hygiene kits, clothing and much more, to help serve those in need by providing school supply packages required by the Board of Education.

Each Jansport backpack included notebooks, pencil cases, scissors, pencils, markers, crayons, glue and folders. In addition to the supplies, two age-appropriate books were placed in the backpacks.

This book donation was the culmination of a book drive, organized and executed by the Junior League of Greenwich and the Greenwich Education Group.

All supplies and backpacks were underwritten by the Junior League of Greenwich and made possible by the Done In A Day committee under the direction of Sue Moretti Rogers, Junior League of Greenwich president.

The backpack project was part of the Junior League of Greenwich’s efforts to recognize the diversity of Greenwich residents.

“We lose perspective that there are many people who can’t afford to buy a backpack for their child to take to school,” said Moretti Rogers. “It’s a big misconception in Greenwich. We are always looking to reach out into the community in new ways, and we thought this would be a great way to support Greenwich Public Schools and its kindergartners.”
