Greenwich Schools Community Service Awards Tradition Continues Despite Pandemic

On Wednesday Greenwich Schools students were presented with the district’s Community Service Awards, in a ceremony on Zoom.

“The Community Service Awards are an honored tradition in our school District, recognizing students who have given so much of their time, energy and efforts to improve their school and broader communities,” said Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones. “I am filled with so much pride when I see and hear about the impact that these impressive students have made.”

Dr. Jones, Board of Education Chair Peter Bernstein, and First Selectman Fred Camillo shared remarks and School Principals and House Administrators presented
awards to the elementary, middle and high school student recipients.

Former Greenwich Schools Superintendent Dr. Ernest Fleishman presented the Fleishman Award for Community Service to GHS senior Emil Perdue who will attend University of Chicago in the fall.

Decades ago, Dr. Fleishman came up with the idea for the community service awards years ago when he drove on Route 1 over the state line from Port Chester into Greenwich where there were signs recognizing the town’s athletes. He said that in addition to athletes and academic stars the school system should recognized students who give of themselves.
