There was a huge turnout for Greenwich High School’s International Night on Thursday. This was the third year of the new tradition at the school, with food from 50 countries on offer and what seemed to be about twice as many attendees as last year.

Event directors included students from the Spanish Honor Society, Chinese Honor Society/Club, French Honor Society/Club, Italian Honor Society, and the German Honor Society/Club.

The evening consisted of a feast, followed by dancing and singing. Performing Flamenco, traditional dance from Southern Spain, were Maria Trinidad Dabbadie, Ana Andrade, Aitana Rodriguez, Bella Albanese.

Italian teacher in the World Languages Department, Angelo Raus sang Erba di Casa Mia.

Performing Bachata Dance and Merengue were Sebastian Correa, Paola Jaramillo, Amanda Cabrera Santiago, Noah Barret, Sabrina Moreno and Samuel Bravo.

Jennifer Yin sang a traditional Chinese song, and played her violin.

José Vargas and Vincent Smario sang Frank Sinatra’s “My Way,” which inspired the crowd to put their phones into flashlight mode and wave them overhead.

Spanish Honors Society member Justin Bernstein, one of the event organizers, said this year the invitation was extended to the entire school district.

“This is a great way for people to come together and show school spirit in a different way,” Justin said. “This highlights Greenwich’s diversity which a lot of people think we don’t have.”

During the event several students gave shared memories of their beloved French teacher, Madame Carole Constandaki, who recently died, each attesting to the profound impact she had made, both academically and personally.

Nicolas Sosa and Axel Persson shared the tribute set up in the student center for Madame Constandaki, who taught at GHS for about 14 years.

Nicolas, whose family background is French, explained why Madame Constandaki meant so much to all her students.

“She pushed us to speak real French,” Nicolas said. “I have the French background, but I always struggled with French grammar.”

“She was so passionate about culture and language,” he added. “We invited her family her to show them the love and support she had at the school.”

Axel described Madame Constandaki’s classroom.

“She harbored a French environment in the classroom,” he said. “She never spoke English in the classroom.”

The French Honor Society has started a scholarship to be awarded to junior French language students to pay for their AP level exam fees. They hoped to be able to expand the scholarships.
