International Night at GHS Showcases School’s Diverse Cultures

Greenwich High School’s second annual International Night took place on Friday night, with more food and more attendees than the inaugural year in 2023.

Hundreds of people attended, and dozens of students and their families brought in delicious dishes to represent their respective cultures.

After families filled their plates and sat down to eat, they were treated to five different performances, ranging from professional Chinese classical dances to Spanish Flamenco performed by GHS students.

Isabella Crasto and Justin Bernstein, both members of the Spanish Honor Society were among the event organizers.

“We’re all super excited,” Isabella said, adding that an RSVP form had been distributed and about 350 people said they planned to attend, with about 75 people preparing dishes.

“The event was organized by all the language honor societies working together – French, Italian, German and Chinese,” Justin said. “We’re really hoping this event continues.”

José Vargas brought a dessert called Crostata di Marmalata, which he described as an Italian tart filled with strawberry jam. Vincent Smario brought a homemade dinner entree, Linguine Alla Vongole, made with clams, linguine and white sauce. April 26, 2024 Photo: Leslie Yager

GHS juniors, Jose Vargas and Vincent Smario agreed the event was a great celebration of the school’s diversity.

“The event adds a nice, new tradition, with foods from all parts of the world,” Vincent said.

“If you look around, you see a lot of happy people,” José said. “It allows everyone to sample new foods and learn about other cultures.”

“I think there is a stereotype of Greenwich being all white. It isn’t true,” Vincent said. “It’s very diverse and that’s why we like it. It’s more like the real world.”
