Glenville Corridor Nears Completion; Road Closure for Paving Approved

Years in the making, the Glenville Corridor Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Project spanning roughly 1,500 feet from the intersection of Glen Ridge Road/Glenville Street to the intersection with Weaver Street is nearing completion.

Construction optimizes traffic signals, adds sidewalks, improves intersections and enhances pedestrian safety.

Busy traffic along the corridor includes parents driving children to Glenville School as well as to Brunswick and Sacred Heart Greenwich on King Street, to and from Westchester Airport and commuters coming from Rte 684. The corridor is also traveled by people to and from Greenwich Hospital and to downtown Greenwich. At the time the project was conceived back in 2019, then Deputy DPW Commissioner (now Commissioner) Jim Michel said the number of vehicles passing through the corridor on a daily basis was about 15,000.

There were years of delays along the way and a funding shortfall. Ultimately, the Connecticut Dept of Transportation approved an award of $6.5 million in state funds to cover the project’s total cost.

At the last Selectmen meeting on May 28, DPW civil engineer Ian Brown requested a road closure on Glenville Road between Glen Ridge and Weaver Street for the overnight hours (9:00pm to 6:00am) between June 21 to June 25.

Brown said he anticipated securing a digital message board announcing the paving to remind drivers of the road closures.

He said the contractor is A&J, and that he would instruct them to stage construction vehicles on Pemberwick Road at intersection of Glenville Road, where there are fewer residences, rather than Weaver Street, since there will be noise from vehicles backing up and beeping.

“I’m excited to see this project coming together,” said Selectwoman Rachel Khanna.  “I’m hopeful once the paving is done, the re-striping is done and the lights are synchronized that some of the bottlenecks we’re seeing are going to be alleviated. It’s been a long time coming.”

“This is the light at the end of the tunnel,” Brown said. “The paving is some of the last work we’re doing. Once the paving is done, we have a couple punch list items, obviously we have to re-stripe the road, but hopefully we’ll be out of Glenville’s way soon.”

Khanna said the timing was ideal considering DeCicco & Sons will be opening soon.

The Selectmen voted 3-0 in favor of the road closure.

A change that drivers are adjusting to is that the parking in front of Glenville Pizza at 243 Glenville Rd is gone.

The area where cars parked haphazardly for decades has been replaced with an extended curb, grass and sidewalk with room for picnic tables. There is parallel parking patrons can use just west of the restaurant.
