Greenwich First Selectman Fred Camillo and local elected leaders are calling upon the State of Connecticut to place an immediate moratorium on zoning mandates for all municipalities.
A press conference will be held outside Greenwich Town Hall on Friday, July 24, at 1:00pm.
This comes after First Selectman Camillo recently discovered that Connecticut Natural Gas does not have the infrastructure to meet the demands of new and expanded housing in Greenwich. Similar issues have also come to light in subsequent conversations he had with Aquarion Water Company.
This lack of capacity for Connecticut’s utilities makes clear the strain that Greenwich and other communities are facing due to the mandates from Hartford that circumvent the approval and input from local zoning authorities.
First Selectman Camillo is also working on finalizing details of a public forum with CNG, Aquarion and Eversource in September at Greenwich Town Hall.
This is an issue that affects all Connecticut municipalities and Greenwich was just the first to discover the problem.
“The burdensome housing mandates that have been placed throughout the State of Connecticut have now taxed our infrastructure to the point that we can no longer keep up,” First Selectman Camillo said.
“We understand the need for housing in Connecticut but when it is done through mandates and demands from Hartford and not with the careful consideration of local zoning authorities, utility companies and local municipal public works and sewer departments, you create problems like this. A moratorium on zoning mandates throughout the State of Connecticut is immediately needed so work can be done to improve infrastructure and better meet the demand in the State.”
