Meet the GFP Intern: GA Grad, Bowdoin Class of ’19, Hannah Karlan

Screen Shot 2016-06-04 at 12.52.46 PMMeet Greenwich Free Press summer intern Hannah Karlan, who connected with us via Quad Jobs over the winter. Hannah hit the deck running on June 4 at the Coffee with a Cop event at McDonald’s, where she met several members of the Greenwich Police force, including Officer Tom Heustis.

From there, she helped cover the Ham Ave School Spring-A-Palooza, before venturing to the Concours d’Elegance for photo opportunities.

Hannah, who attended Stanwich School through eighth grade, and Greenwich Academy for her high school years, is a rising sophomore at Bowdoin College.

“I picked Bowdoin because my older brother went there and I fell in love with the school,” she said. “It’s small and has a big emphasis on nature and sense of place.”

With a keen interest in environmental studies, Hannah looks forward to writing features on Long Island Sound and Augustine’s Farm this summer.

Hannah, who comes from a big family with five older half-siblings and three siblings, is an avid reader who also loves to write. Her favorite books are The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and The Help, by Kathryn Stockett.

Like previous GFP interns Allie Primak and Katherine Du, who attended Greenwich Academy, Hannah also wrote for the Greenwich Academy Press, in addition to the school’s literary magazine, Daedalus.

“I wanted to intern at GFP because I was wanted to be home this summer,” she said. “I didn’t want to commute to the city. And I always thought about journalism as a career path.”

Watch for Hannah’s stories this summer on Greenwich Free Press.
