Jack Hanna and Menagerie to Visit Maritime Aquarium

Celebrated zookeeper Jack Hanna will recount his adventures in the wild while displaying a menagerie of live animal friends in two special shows on Wed., May 7 at The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk. The animal adventures will begin at 2:00pm & 7:30 pm in the Aquarium’s IMAX Theater. Click for ticket information. The animal “guests” for Hanna’s upcoming visit haven’t been announced. Last year’s collection included Fennec fox kits, a 15-foot python, a Siberian lynx, a lemur, a lesser anteater, a penguin, a beaver, a young wallaby, a six-week-old black bear, and many others. McArdle’s Earth Day Talk: Planting to Host and Feed Butterflies

Earth Day was fitting timing for a gardeners’ talk on the topic of butterflies at McArdle’s Florist and Garden Center. The talk was given by McArdle’s Margaret Mikolenko, in conjunction with Greenwich Land Trust to give a boost to the environment, and in particular, to butterflies, which are disappearing. Mikolenko explained that plants that are attractive to butterflies can be divided into Hosts and Feeders. The list of plants that provide food is lengthy, and you may already have several of them in your garden, but according to Mikolenko, a foolproof way to lure butterflies is with the simple Zinnia. She said Earth Day is not too early to sew Zinnia seeds and that McArdle’s has them in stock. Continue Reading →

Greenwich Community Gardens is proud to announce Garden Plot SIGN-UP DAYS for the NEW Bible Street Community Garden! Anyone who wants to become a community gardener at Bible Street must attend one of our plot sign-up meetings at Cos Cob Firehouse, 2nd floor meeting room, 200 East Putnam Ave. Saturday, April 26th – 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Sunday, April 27th – 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm

The approximately 90 plots will be assigned on a First-come, First-serve basis. Come learn more about how the garden will operate and the responsibilities of community gardeners and complete an application and pay for your garden plot. So sweet and tender these fresh spring peas are exquisite. Try and use fresh peas and beans if possible. Serve with sliced smoked chicken breast topped with tzatziki dressing. INGREDIENTS

3 Cups Fresh or Frozen Peas
1 Cup Fresh or Frozen French Cut Green Beans
¼ Teaspoon Kosher Salt
8 Fresh Mint Leaves (Divided)
3 Tablespoons Olive Oil
Kosher Salt & Freshly Ground Pepper To Taste

Cook peas and green beans in salted boiling water with half of mint leaves for 15 minutes until tender. If you are using frozen peas and beans, the cooking time may vary. Continue Reading →

If that’s your preference, you’ll hit the jackpot if you visit the sanctuary this weekend because this cutie is just one of a litter of ten rescued from North Carolina. Oftentimes, in the south, municipal shelters will euthanize the puppies first. Sad, but true, so if it’s a puppy you’re after, consider supporting Adopt-A-Dog’s mission of providing sanctuary for owner surrenders by meeting this adorable crew first. Greenwich Native Runs Boston Marathon for 6th Year, Raises Funds for Pediatric Cancer

UPDATE: By the close of the Boston Marathon, Phoebe Yager exceeded her $10,000 goal, raising $10,573 for Mass General Children’s Cancer Center. Editor’s Note: This story is about my younger sister. Phoebe Yager, who attended Glenville School and Greenwich Academy before going on to college and medical school, is running the Boston Marathon on Monday. Phoebe, who works at Mass General in pediatric intensive care, has run the marathon to raise money for Mass General Children’s Center for several years, including last year when she crossed the finish line just minutes before the bombs exploded. Phoebe’s husband Steve Schrodel and their boys Graham and Miles, now 7 and 4 respectively, had rooted for her from mile 22. Continue Reading →

GHS Student Employment Services Seeks Listings from Local Businesses and Employers

Despite all the wonderful support Student Employment Services has been getting from employers, SES has many more students looking for work than they have openings. This school year they have listed over 1,300 jobs but it is not enough when there are on average 250 students seeking employment opportunities every month. Do you have a posting to share with Student Employment Services? They have over 4,000 registered Greenwich students at SES between the ages of 14 and 25 who are either working or actively looking for jobs.  Soon many students graduating from college will need  full time jobs, college students will be returning mid-May and  join the ranks of our high school students seeking a summer, part time and one shot positions. Talk About Train Safety. Senator Blumenthal Within Inches of Speeding Train

During a Good Friday press conference on train safety at the busy Milford train station platform, Senator Blumenthal is a little close for comfort as an Amtrak train races up behind him. In the video posted to YouTube by KHON2 News, the Senator is standing on the yellow caution area at the edge of the platform as the Mayor of Milford Ben Blake delivers his remarks. “We have about 5,000 customers taking the train each day,” Mayor Blake says. “Safety, as you know, is paramount,” he continues just as an Amtrak train rushes past, a rush of wind tousling hair and blowing a poster visual off its tripod.
