GoFundMe Started for Greenwich Police Detective First Grade Michael Rooney

Greenwich Police Detective Michael Rooney, a 21-year veteran of the Greenwich Police Department and former Marine, is in a coma following brain surgery complications.

According to a GoFundme created by Peter Schmitt, President of the Greenwich Police Silver Shield Association, Rooney entered Yale New Haven hospital last week to have a tumor removed from his brain.

“Following the procedure Mike’s brain has unexpectedly endured a tremendous amount of swelling,” Shmitt wrote. “He is currently in a coma and fighting the battle of his life. Mike is a warrior and will continue to fight.”

Detective was promoted to Detective First Grade just this past July at a ceremony in Greenwich Town Hall. He is currently assigned the Special Victims Section advocating for and investigating crimes against our most vulnerable population. Additionally, he has been assigned to the FBI task force targeting online sexual predators and violent crimes against children.

At the promotion ceremony, Greenwich Police Chief Heavey said Detective Michael Rooney grew up in Salem, MA and graduated from Sacred Heart University with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.

In the US Marine Corps Rooney was part of the fleet anti-terrorism security team.

He became a Greenwich Police officer on Oct 14, 2003 and a detective on Feb 4, 2013.

Since joining the department, Rooney has been part of the SRU team, the Honor Guard, Community Impact Section, the Special Victim Section, and is currently assigned to the FBI’s Violent Crimes Against Children Task Force in New Haven.

Over the years Rooney has received numerous letters of recognition, divisional commendations, divisional letters of commendation, divisional letters of recognition, the merit award, investigative ribbons, ribbons of commendation, two unit citations, and has been officer of the month.

Rooney, who served in the Special Victims Section and on an FBI task force protecting vulnerable children, is now facing his toughest battle, according to the GoFundMe fundraiser in support of Detective Rooney’s wife and their two children.

As of Tuesday afternoon the GoFundMe has raised over $43,000 toward a $100,000 goal.
