To mark the beginning of Domestic Violence Prevention and Awareness Month, YWCA Greenwich will host its annual Walk the Walk Against Domestic Violence, now with a 5K Run, on Sunday, October 6 at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park.
Check-in begins at 8:15am and the run begins at 9:00am.
The Annual Walk the Walk Against Domestic Violence is presented by co-chairs Tracy Guarnera, Greenwich Police Chief Jim Heavey, and Heather Sahrbeck, and helps raise funds and awareness for free domestic and sexual violence services through the Harmony Project at YWCA Greenwich.
“Our annual Walk the Walk and now 5K Run Against Domestic Violence is such a special community event – it reflects how healing it is for those who have experienced trauma to be out in nature, to move their bodies, and to physically see the outpouring of support from their community. For too long domestic violence has been treated as a private family matter, commonly referred to as a women’s issue. Truly, this is a public health crisis impacting hundreds, likely more, right here in Greenwich – adults, teens, and children across all demographics, although no two survivor’s experiences are the same,” explained Jessie DiMuzio, Director of Harmony Project.
Harmony Project is also holding a toiletries collection drive for clients in need. We are looking for new and unopened toiletries and basic clothing items like deodorant, condition, face wash, razors, hairbrushes and makeup and skin products. New and unused products can be dropped off in the YWCA Greenwich lobby during business hours.
“YWCA Greenwich has been providing the full menu of free domestic violence services since 1981 and added sexual violence services in 2023. We serve everyone in the community, young and old, from every part of town. If you or anyone you know needs help or wants to better understand behaviors that might be abusive, please call our 24/7 hotline at (203) 622-0003,” said YWCA Greenwich CEO and President Mary Lee Kiernan.
YWCA Greenwich’s Harmony Project offers free and confidential services, including counseling, crisis intervention, emergency shelter, criminal court advocacy, and a 24/7 hotline.
