An event to mark the reopening of Abilis Gardens & Gifts in their renovated building was well attended by Abilis staff, elected officials and some of the adults who work in the retail operation.
The building, which serves as a retail training site for the Abilis Employment program, has been transformed.
Many will remember the operation previously revolved around a greenhouse that was not properly insulated for year-round use. Today, the new building is spacious, accessible and vibrant.
Adults with disabilities receive both vocational and job skills training, empowering them to gain skills, independence and employment.

And October is recognized as National Disability Employment Awareness Month, so it was fitting to celebrate the reopening and celebrate the contributions of people with disabilities and to reaffirm the Town’s commitment to inclusive employment opportunities.
In a proclamation on Tuesday, First Selectman Fred Camillo said the vocational training program at Abilis Gardens & Gifts embodies the belief that every person, regardless of ability, has unique talents and valuable contributions to their community.
The shop has a nice assortment of handmade soaps, candles and bath & body products, jewelry, plus grab-and-go floral arrangements, making it the ideal stop to shop local, further the Abilis mission and select thoughtful gifts.
Shopping at Abilis Gardens & Gifts helps support the Abilis Competitive Employment program and provide meaningful retail training for adults with disabilities.
