37th Annual One Mile Swim Returns to Greenwich Point to Support Water Safety and Swim Lesson Scholarships

On Saturday, July 11, swimmers of all ages and abilities will take to the waters of Long Island Sound for the 37th Annual One Mile Swim at Greenwich Point.

Co-hosted by the Greenwich Swim Committee and the YMCA of Greenwich, the longtime community tradition raises funds to support swim lesson scholarships and water safety initiatives that help keep local children safe in and around the water.

For nearly four decades, the One Mile Swim has brought together competitive swimmers, recreational athletes, families, and community supporters around a shared purpose: ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn how to swim.

While the One Mile Swim lasts less than an hour for most participants, its impact is felt throughout the year. Funds raised help provide swim lesson scholarships for children, adults, and families who otherwise may not be able to afford instruction, while also supporting the YMCA’s growing Safety Around Water initiative.

Through its partnership with Greenwich Public Schools, the YMCA evaluates approximately 600 fourth-grade students each year to assess their water safety skills. Students who need additional support are offered free eight-week swim lesson sessions at the YMCA. This year, 89 local students qualified for the program.

In a coastal community like Greenwich, swimming is more than recreation—it’s a critical safety skill. With drowning remaining one of the leading causes of accidental death among children, the YMCA is committed to ensuring that every member of the community has the opportunity to learn how to be safe and confident around water.

The One Mile Swim begins at 7:30am on Saturday, July 11, with check-in opening at 6:30am at Greenwich Point. Participants will complete a one-mile course in Long Island Sound and receive a commemorative event T-shirt. Awards will be presented to the top overall finishers and top swimmers in each age group.

Registration is $65 for adults and $30 for youth under 18.
