CT Office of Chief Medical Examiner: Deaths In Old Greenwich Ruled Homicide-Suicide

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed Friday morning the cause of death of Old Greenwich residents Stein Erik Soelberg, 56, and his mother Suzanne Adams, 83.

Greenwich Police responded to 11 Shorelands a request for a welfare check on Tuesday and discovered the two deceased.

On Friday morning, Aug 8, the OCME Investigations Dept, who investigate sudden, unexpected or violent deaths, said Ms Adams death was ruled homicide, “caused by blunt injury of head, and the neck was compressed.”

Further, they said Mr. Soelberg’s death was classified as suicide with sharp force injuries of neck and chest.

Mr. Soelberg was a member of the class of 1987 at Brunswick School in Greenwich. Class notes from the school’s alumni magazine in Winter 2007 said Soelberg had written to say he was married and had children aged 3 and 1 at the time. The notes said he was living and working in Atlanta for a telecommunications start up specializing in business-grade VoIP.

Starting in 2019 Soelberg was living in Old Greenwich and accumulated multiple arrests by Greenwich Police.

As recently as the night of February 12, 2025, he was arrested after an incident near the Old Greenwich Civic Center when he drove through a stop sign and evaded police. He was charged with Disobeying Signal of Officer, Evading Responsibility, DUI, Failure to Drive in Proper Lane, Failure to Obey Stop Signal and Operating MV without License.

Back in June 2019 he was charged with Breach of Peace 2 and Criminal Mischief 3 for allegedly urinating in a woman’s duffel bag outside the entrance to the police station.

In July 2919 Soelberg was arrested after police responded to a report of a subject ramming his car into parked cars. Police said the owner of one vehicle had an active order of protection against Soelberg who was then charged with with Criminal Trespass 1, Criminal Mischief 1, Breach of Peace 2 and Violating a Standing Protective Order.

A GoFundMe set up for Soelberg Sept 3, 2023 is titled, “Help Stein-Erik with his upcoming medical bills!” aimed to raise $25,000 for a “surgery for a procedure to help him with his recent jaw cancer diagnosis. This is a recent development, and his doctors are planning an aggressive timeline to try to get this under control. Stein-Erik is without health insurance at the moment, so anything you can contribute is greatly appreciated.”

Mr. Soelberg responded with gratitude on October 14, saying, “So yesterday I had my third surgery, at Yale New Haven, and it was the most major one yet. The good news is they have ruled out cancer with a high probability. The bad news is that they cannot seem to come up with a diagnosis and bone tumors continue to grow in my jawbone. They removed a half a golf ball yesterday. Sorry for the visual there

In total $6,595 was raised from 29 donations.

In the days leading up to the homicide-suicide, Mr. Soelberg’s Instagram, which has over 100,000 followers @eriktheviking1987, “Futurist, AI, IoT, B-Chain, alt meds. Amateur #bodybuilder. Matrix Eraser fighting for healing and peace. #teamlight” includes a post where he appears to scroll ChatGPT information about himself.

In one post he writes in part, “The best part about this is how the world has become so corrupt that the government has been unable to control its own means of manipulation and watching how it’s turning on itself.”

In another post two weeks before his death, Mr. Soelberg sings an original song, “I’m giving up on everything…I won’t change for you and I won’t take your pain. There’s nothing you can do. There’s nowhere you can stay.”

The Wall Street Journal has recently written features about potential dangers associated with interacting with ChatGPT. In 2024 Associated Press wrote that a Florida mother was suing a tech company because she said an AI Chatbot pushed her 14-year-old son to kill himself and the chatbot had become his closest friend.
