Blaze in Cos Cob Renders Commercial Building Uninhabitable

A fire broke out before midnight on Monday at 522 East Putnam Ave. Before the fire was brought under control it caused heavy damage to the commercial building which is near the intersection of Indian Field Road and Putnam Ave.

There was heavy damage to the first and second floors and smoke damage throughout the building.

The building is home to Pizza Post and Gofer Ice Cream.

On Tuesday morning Greenwich Police Lt John Slusarz said, “An alert officer on patrol last night discovered a fire in a local pizzeria. At about 11 p.m. Greenwich Police Officer Brian Andronaco noticed a smoke condition in the Cos Cob section of Town.”

Slusarz said officer Andronaco tracked the source to 522 East Putnam Ave and alerted the Fire Dept, who responded and put the fire out.

No one was in the building when firefighters arrived and no firefighters were injured getting the fire under control which took 50firefighters about 35 minutes, according to reports.

Businesses in the commercial building are closed Tuesday morning.

The cause and origin are being investigated by the Fire Department.
