The Greenwich Police Department announced the recent death of retired Greenwich Police Detective David Hughes. He was 84 years old.
Detective Hughes started his 24 year career with the Greenwich Police Department on August 1, 1960 and retired on August 1, 1984.
Detective Hughes was born on June 22, 1938 and raised in New Rochelle New York. Prior to becoming a Greenwich Police Officer, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1958 until 1960.
During his career, Detective Hughes served in the Patrol Division and was appointed to Detective on May 1, 1971.
He received the John Clarke Award in 1972 for his courageous performance of duty exemplifying the highest traditions of law enforcement. He received this honor for helping to apprehend two fugitive escapees from the Arizona State Prison who had taken two Arizona officers hostage.
He also received numerous citations for exceptional police work and received many thank you letters from grateful citizens.
