4-Way Stop Proposed for Treacherous Cos Cob Intersection

A fix may be in the works for the treacherous intersection of Valley Rd, River Rd Ext and Scofield Street in Cos Cob.

First Selectman Fred Camillo said Frank Cantavaro had requested repeatedly that town to address the situation, given there have been crashes and pedestrians hurt.

“We think we have a way to slow traffic down there,” Camillo said.

The awkward intersection is anchored by The Makerie Cafe, Bax’s Bicycles, K9 Clippers Salon, and the St. Lawrence Club.

The Stop line on River Rd Ext is proposed to be pushed forward to improve visibility. A Stop would be added on Valley headed  north.

At the Selectmen meeting, DPW civil engineer Michael Kiselak said issues with the intersection had come up during the series of input sessions on public safety last spring.

Indeed residents complained that vehicles accelerate up the hill on Valley Rd and speed down the other side. They also noted that Valley Rd is a cut through to and from Stamford via Palmer Hill.

He said DPW had collected data including crashes, speeds, volumes, pedestrian crossings and sight lines, and their recommendation was to install all-way stop control.

The proposal was a “first read.”

The Selectmen, who serve as the town’s traffic authority, are anticipated to vote at their next meeting in two weeks.

Kiselak said going back to 2016, there had been 21 crashes reported to police.

Since 2021, there had been 9 crashes, of which four involved bikes and pedestrians.

“Many of them have been angle collisions,” Kiselak said. “Those are typically  correctable by an all way stop.”

He added that DPW would work with the Greenwich Police Dept to let them know about the new configuration.

Kiselak said the Stop signs would have a plaque indicating, “All Way Stop.”

This Tuesday afternoon, St. Lawrence Society members on the club’s front porch said the solution would be welcome, and that someone had been hit in the intersection just a week earlier.
